Streptococcus pneumoniae is a rare cause of sepsis in the newborn. ⋯ In preventing the probable complications, it is important to absolutely treat the maternal pneumococcal colonization that can cause severe infections in the newborn and also to treat the newborns even if they are asymptomatic.
