Voxel-based statistical analysis of brain metabolism in patients with growth hormone deficiency after traumatic brain injury.
The aim of this study was to investigate the regional cerebral metabolism related to growth hormone deficiency (GHD) after traumatic brain injury (TBI) using F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (F-18 FDG PET) images. ⋯ The findings are suggestive of the brain region influenced by GHD. These cortical areas are involved in regulation of intellectual function, executive function and working memory.

Injury of the inferior cerebellar peduncle in patients with mild traumatic brain injury: A diffusion tensor tractography study.
No study on injury of the inferior cerebellar peduncle (ICP) in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has been reported. This study, using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT), attempted to demonstrate injury of the ICP in patients with mTBI. ⋯ Evaluation of the ICP using DTT would be useful in patients with a balance problem after mTBI.

Protective effect of rhEPO on tight junctions of cerebral microvascular endothelial cells early following traumatic brain injury in rats.
The goal of this study was to investigate the protective effect of recombinant human EPO(rhEPO) on cerebral microvascular endothelial cells and the mechanisms by which rhEPO interacts with TJs proteins, claudin-5, Occludin and ZO-1 during the early period following traumatic brain injury. ⋯ It was found that administration of rhEPO protected cerebral microvascular endothelial cells and reduced permeability of BBB and the mechanisms may be due to increasing the expression of TJs proteins.

Could combined sleep and pain evaluation be useful in the diagnosis of disorders of consciousness (DOC)? Preliminary findings.
The diagnosis of Disorders of Consciousness (DOC) is still challenging. Indeed, ~ 40% of patients in vegetative state (VS) are misdiagnosed, suggesting the need of more appropriate diagnostic tools. Emerging data are showing that EEG, including sleep structure evaluation and multimodal evoked potential recording could be helpful in DOC diagnosis. Moreover, pain perception evaluation could further increase diagnosis accuracy in such individuals. ⋯ The data support previous findings concerning the importance of sleep study in DOC diagnosis, with more specific neurophysiological paradigms. Interestingly, the findings shed some light on the possible correlations among global brain connectivity, sleep structure and pain perception, which are related to the activity of the wide thalamo-cortical and cortico-cortical networks underlying consciousness.
