Long-term physical and mental health outcomes associated with traumatic brain injury severity in post-9/11 veterans: A retrospective cohort study.
To examine long-term outcomes of self-reported physical and mental health among Post-9/11 Veterans stratified by traumatic brain injury (TBI) severity, we hypothesized that more severe TBI would be associated with significantly poorer outcomes. ⋯ Veterans with any TBI exposure experience poorer long-term outcomes than those with no TBI even when covariates are considered. In particular, measures of somatization, PTSD symptom distress, and depression indicate pervasive and long-term health concerns among individuals with TBI. Additional research is required to fully explicate what appear to be complex relationships among TBI severity, physical and mental well-being, combat exposures, and socioeconomic resources in this population.

Barriers and strategies for coordinating care among veterans with traumatic brain injury: a mixed methods study of VA polytrauma care team members.
Veterans who experience traumatic brain injury (TBI) may have long-term needs placing a premium on well-coordinated care. This study aimed to (1) identify barriers to care coordination for Veterans with TBI; and (2) describe strategies used by VA polytrauma care team members to coordinate care for Veterans with TBI. ⋯ Polytrauma care team members encounter barriers to care coordination for Veterans with TBI, and have developed strategies in response. Information sharing, provider workload, communication, and patient engagement will be critical to address in future efforts to enhance care coordination in this context.

Functional outcomes following post-acute rehabilitation for moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury.
The objective of this study was to examine the benefits of long-term inpatient rehabilitation for individuals with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). ⋯ Continued specialised inpatient services following acute inpatient rehabilitation for individuals with moderate-to-severe TBI can reduce the level of dependency and enhance the likelihood of return to community living.

Admission circulating monocytes level is an independent predictor of outcome in traumatic brain injury.
The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of admission immune cell levels in the peripheral blood in determining outcomes in patients with TBI. ⋯ The present study suggests that an increase in admission monocyte count is correlated with a favourable 6-month outcome in patients with moderate-to-severe TBI.

Factor structure of the Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire over the first year following mild traumatic brain injury.
We examined the factor structure of the Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptom Questionnaire (RPQ), the most commonly used measure of post-concussive symptoms, over the first year post-injury. ⋯ The factor structure of the RPQ changes over time; however, it was relatively stable from 6 to 12-months post-injury. Subject to further evaluation, assessments conducted from 6 months could consider using these two factors as subscales. Changing the factor structure of RPQ before 6 months suggests that timing of assessment should be considered in applying these factors.
