Multicenter StudyThe relationship between changes in quality of life outcomes and progression of Alzheimer's disease: results from the dependence in AD in England 2 longitudinal study.
The relationship between conventional indicators of Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression and quality of life (QoL) outcomes is unclear. Dependence on others has been recommended as a unifying construct in defining AD severity. This study examined the relationship between indicators of disease severity (including dependence) and changes in QoL and utility over 18 months. ⋯ The natural progression of AD over 18 months does not lead to inevitable decline in QoL or utility. There are no clear or consistent direct relationships between changes in disease severity and QoL outcomes. The impact of increasing dependence and worsening disease severity is likely buffered by a combination of psychological, social and environmental factors.

Review Meta AnalysisDo antipsychotics prevent postoperative delirium? A systematic review and meta-analysis.
To summarize the effect of antipsychotics for preventing postoperative delirium. ⋯ Within the limits of few randomized controlled trials, antipsychotics appeared to reduce the incidence of postoperative delirium in several surgical settings, predominantly orthopedic and for those at higher risk for delirium.

Clinical profiles of dementia with Lewy bodies with and without Alzheimer's disease-like hypometabolism.
It is well known that Alzheimer's disease (AD)-type pathology is commonly present in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) brains and that the degree of AD-type pathology has an influence on the clinical characteristics of DLB. Although significant hypometabolism in the temporoparietal/precuneus on [(18)F]fluoro-d-glucose ((18)F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) scans is considered to support a diagnosis of AD, some DLB patients also exhibit this metabolic pattern. The clinical significance of the metabolic pattern on DLB remains unknown. ⋯ Parietal/precuneus hypometabolism may be associated with clinical characteristics in DLB patients. Further multiple imaging modalities that are sensitive to AD-type pathology are needed to reveal the neurobiological basis of the AD-like metabolic pattern.

Visual rating and volumetric measurement of medial temporal atrophy in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort: baseline diagnosis and the prediction of MCI outcome.
This study aims to determine the clinical utility of visual ratings and volumetric measurements of medial temporal atrophy among subjects from the Alzheimer's Disease Neurorimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort. ⋯ Visual ratings of HPC and ERC provide useful information to a physician in a clinical setting. Visual ratings of ERC may be especially useful in following patients with MCI.
