Flexible laryngoscopy: a comparison of fiber optic and distal chip technologies. Part 1: vocal fold masses.
This study was designed to evaluate the usefulness of fiber optic (FO) and distal chip (DC) flexible imaging platforms in the diagnosis of true vocal fold pathology when compared to the gold standard rigid transoral laryngeal telescopic examination. The recorded strobovideolaryngoscopic examinations of 34 consecutive patients were evaluated retrospectively by five raters. All stroboscopy segments were evaluated by two laryngologists, an otolaryngologist, a laryngology fellow, and an otolaryngology resident. ⋯ Rigid endoscopy provides superior images of the true vocal folds and is necessary for precise diagnosis in patients with true vocal fold pathology. Thus, the most cost-effective means of evaluation of voice disorders remains FO flexible endoscopy for dynamic voice assessment and the neurolaryngologic examination followed by rigid stroboscopy for evaluation of the vocal fold edge and mucosal wave. Strobovideolaryngoscopy using high-quality FO or DC flexible equipment should be reserved for patients who cannot tolerate transoral rigid examination, such as children and those with a very strong gag reflex.

In recent years, the availability of studio teaching technology tools for the classical singing studio has developed exponentially. Nevertheless, the integration of voice analysis technology and other computer-based technology into a traditional classical singing studio can be a daunting task for many teachers, despite fine instructional texts such as those of Garyth Nair (1999) and Scott McCoy (2004). For this reason, The Texas Tech Voice Alliance developed and assessed a bicoastal online survey of classical singing pedagogues in the United States about their perceptions of, and attitudes toward, the use of studio teaching technology. ⋯ Discussion focuses on descriptive survey results and analyses, including agreement and disagreement between classical singing pedagogues regarding real or perceived uses and future benefits of voice studio teaching technology in their studio programs. Results of this survey provide data on which to base future studies. Building on the record of existing software and related literature, and through ongoing research, this team ultimately intends to expand the survey group and use the results to guide us in further development of user-friendly computer-based technology.

Traditionally, timbre has been defined as that perceptual attribute that differentiates two sounds when pitch and loudness are equal, and thus is a measure of dissimilarity. By such a definition, each voice possesses a set of timbres, and the ability to identify any voice or voice category across different pitch-loudness-vowel combinations must be due to an ability to "link" these timbres by abstracting the "timbre transformation," the manner in which timbre subtly changes across pitch and loudness for a specific voice or voice category. Using stimuli produced across the singing range by singers from different voice categories, this study sought to examine how timbre and pitch interact in the perception of dissimilarity in male singing voices. ⋯ Dimension 3 appeared highly idiosyncratic depending on the nature of the stimuli and on the experience of the listener. Inexperienced listeners appeared to rely more heavily on pitch in making dissimilarity judgments than did experienced listeners. The resulting MDS representations of dissimilarity across pitch provide a glimpse of the timbre transformation of voice categories across pitch.

Electrotherapy and the human voice: a literature review of the historical origins and contemporary applications.
The present article surveys the literature on the electrotherapy treatment for voice disorders from the mid-18th century to World War I (1914--1918) and the post 1970s reappearance of such therapies. The reappearance of electrotherapy as treatment for voice disorders in the past 20 years has been heralded as a major breakthrough. ⋯ The current resurgence of interest and research in electrical stimulation of the larynx is buoyed by technological innovations analogous to those in the 19th century. Although the current state of research has enhanced our understanding of vocal fold physiology, it does not necessarily provide a new therapeutic approach as a survey of the most recent literature shows.

The objective of this study was to examine the vocal symptoms and acoustic changes perceived in the short period after endotracheal intubation, and to find the association between these changes and the endotracheal tube parameters. A total of 35 subjects were included. They were examined preoperatively, and 2 and 24 hours postoperatively. ⋯ The acoustic parameters did not change significantly except for a decrease in MPT. At 24 hours postoperatively, all vocal symptoms subsided with no significant difference to baseline value. The habitual pitch increased significantly, and the rest of the parameters remained comparable to baseline value.
