Correlates of safety outcomes during patient ambulance transport: a partial test of the Haddon matrix.
The Haddon Matrix has been cited in a recent review of patient safety as a useful framework for understanding Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provider and patient injury prevention and safety during ambulance response and transport. The research goal of this study was to test part of the Haddon matrix, specifically variables within the pre-event host and event host cells, for explaining three multi-item ambulance-related safety outcomes: i.e., anticipated use of safety equipment, securing the patient, and securing the equipment. Complete study data were available for 648 EMS professionals who responded to the 2004 Longitudinal Emergency Medical Technician Attributes and Demographic Study (LEADS) survey. ⋯ Specific findings indicated that EMS professionals with: lower perceived health, greater intrinsic satisfaction, more time in the patient compartment of an ambulance, and greater seatbelt use had higher anticipated use of ambulance safety equipment. For the patient being secured in an ambulance, the extremely high mean/low score variance resulted in only extrinsic satisfaction having a significant positive association. Finally, female EMS professionals, those more extrinsically satisfied, not being involved in a prior ambulance accident, and greater seatbelt use were related to higher frequency of securing ambulance equipment during patient transport.

A study of leadership behaviors among chairpersons in allied health programs.
This study was designed to investigate leadership behaviors among chairpersons in allied health programs, based on their perceptions and the perceptions of faculty. Transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership behaviors, as well as organizational outcomes of effectiveness, extra effort, and satisfaction, were measured using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ Form 5X-Short). A form developed by the researcher was used to gather demographic and program information. ⋯ There was a statistically significant negative correlation, based on the perception of faculty, with the management-by-exception (passive) and laissez-faire leadership factors, and the organizational outcomes of effectiveness, extra effort and satisfaction. Transformational leadership has been identified as an effective strategy to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Further development of the transformational leadership behaviors of chairpersons should be considered a priority for the allied health professions.

Online journal clubs: an innovative approach to achieving evidence-based practice.
Face to face journal clubs have been used as a medium to share knowledge and discuss research findings in relation to clinical practice. However, attendance at journal club meetings has always been identified as a barrier to successful and sustainable journal clubs. ⋯ This article provides suggestions for those who are interested in forming their own online journal club. An online journal club not only provides an opportunity for asynchronous discussion but also allows members to participate in evidence-based discussion at a time and place of convenience.

The path to simulated learning: developing a valid and reliable tool to evaluate performance of radiological technology students in patient interactions.
Simulation-enhanced education is being used in many health care curricula as an answer to an increasing demand for allied health professionals and a paucity of clinical sites crucial to providing requisite clinical education. The effective use of simulation may reduce and provide better use of the time required in clinical environments. If the use of simulation is to become a valuable addition to traditional clinical experiential learning, a reliable and valid measurement tool designed to measure a radiological technologist's performance in a practice environment is vital. ⋯ Overall, this tool was shown to be a reliable, valid, feasible, and usable methodology to assess communication skills with clinical students. Further investigation of the tool is required to examine the tool's ability to reliably identify borderline or mixed skill level students under cultural and non-culture-based scenarios.

Testing for correlates of intent to leave one's job versus intent to leave one's occupation among cancer registrars.
The present investigation involved a field study of cancer registrars (CRs), who collect data used by the National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to study trends in cancer incidence and outcomes. Because of the forecasted shortage of CRs due to the aging of the CR workforce, the professional organization of CRs needed to research the factors related to the recruitment and retention of this workforce. From a national database of 3,393 CRs, data regarding intent to leave one's job and occupation, along with occupational commitment, were obtained from a sample of 374 CRs to meet this research need. ⋯ Results showed that satisfaction with job rewards, interpersonal relations, and fringe benefits had a stronger negative relationship to intent to leave one's job compared with intent to leave one's occupation. Affective and normative occupational commitment facets had a stronger negative relationship to intent to leave one's occupation compared with intent to leave one's job. Beyond demographic control and perceptual variables, these attitudinal job satisfaction and occupational commitment variables together explained the greatest amount of variance in both "intent to leave" measures.
