Effects of low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets on apparent digestibility of minerals and trace elements in rats.
Ketogenic low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) diets reduce growth and bone mineral density in children with epilepsy and in rats. Part of this effect might be due to a reduced availability of calcium in high-fat diets. The aim of this study was to determine mineral digestibility by total collection method in LCHF diets compared with a chow diet and a standard high-fat diet (HFD, high in fat and carbohydrates). ⋯ The alteration of apparent calcium and phosphorus digestibility may affect the impact of HFDs on bone metabolism.

Urea cycle disorders (UCDs) most often involve inherited deficiencies in genes that code for enzymes normally used by the urea cycle to breakdown nitrogen. UCDs lead to serious metabolic complications, including severe neurologic decompensation related to hyperammonemia. ⋯ Early, specialized nutrition therapy is a fundamental aspect of treating hyperammonemic crises in patients with UCD. The case presented here demonstrates the importance of early recognition of UCD and appropriate interventions with nutrition support.

Can ω-3 fatty acids and tocotrienol-rich vitamin E reduce symptoms of neurodevelopmental disorders?
The incidence of childhood neurodevelopmental disorders, which include autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorders, and apraxia, are increasing worldwide and have a profound effect on the behaviors, cognitive skills, mood, and self-esteem of these children. Although the etiologies of these disorders are unclear, they often accompany genetic and biochemical abnormalities resulting in cognitive and communication difficulties. ⋯ The purpose of this review is to provide a scientific rationale based on cellular, experimental animal model, observational, and clinical intervention studies for incorporating the combination of ω-3 fatty acids and tocotrienol-rich vitamin E as complementary nutritional therapies in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Should this nutritional combination correct key clinical or biochemical outcomes and/or improve behavioral patterns, it would provide a safe, complementary option for these children.

Gln223 Arg polymorphism of the leptin receptor (LEPR) gene is one of the most frequently examined polymorphisms of this gene and has been suggested to be associated with energy expenditure (EE). The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of this variant on indicators of EE-resting metabolic rate (RMR), postabsorptive and postprandial respiratory quotient (RQ), and food-induced thermogenesis (FIT)-in obese children. ⋯ The significantly lower post-absorptive and postprandial RQ in the group of Gln223 Gln genotype children indicates that the fat oxidation of these children maybe increased before and subsequent to food consumption, which can be important in the planning of diet of these children.

The aims of the following experiments were to characterize antidiabetic in vitro and in vivo activity of the polyphenol-rich aqueous extract of Rutgers Scarlet Lettuce (RSL). ⋯ RSLE demonstrated antidiabetic effects in vitro and in vivo and may improve metabolic syndrome conditions of fatty liver and glucose metabolism.
