The aim of this study was to investigate the role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) activation (single PPARα or PPARγ, and dual PPARα/γ) on UCP1-dependent and -independent thermogenic pathways and mitochondrial metabolism in the subcutaneous white adipose tissue of mice fed a high-fat diet. ⋯ PPARα and dual PPARα/γ activation recruited UCP1+ beige adipocytes and favored UCP1-independent thermogenesis, yielding body mass and insulin sensitivity normalization. Preserved mitochondrial metabolism emerges as a potential target for obesity treatment using PPAR agonists, with possible clinical applications.

The prevalence of obesity and overweight in children has been increasing rapidly worldwide and threatens society with various chronic diseases that these children are born with. High-protein ketogenic diets and intermittent nutrition are thought to be protective against obesity and metabolic syndrome MetS. However, the exact effects and results, insulin resistance, and the role of leptin in the functioning mechanism of these diets have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of insulin resistance and leptin hormone on the effects of body composition with a high-protein ketogenic diet and intermittent nutrition combination. ⋯ The results of the present study revealed that an intermittent high-protein ketogenic diet is more effective than others in weight loss without disrupting biochemical health parameters, and the applied diets do not prevent growth and development.

The aim of this study was to determine the development of sarcopenia in a COVID-19 intensive care unit population by sequential quadriceps and diaphragm ultrasound and its relationship with hospital outcomes. ⋯ Muscle atrophy and decline in muscle strength appear in the earliest stages after admission to the intensive care unit and are related to functional outcome.

The aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio, an indicator for liver fibrosis, could be easily detected in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to examine the association between the AST/ALT ratio and skeletal muscle mass among Chinese community adult residents. ⋯ In general, the high AST/ALT ratio was an independent adverse indicator of the presence of LMM.
