Laparoscopic gastric sleeve (LGS) resection in super-obese patients (BMI > 50 kg/m2) is a challenging procedure. We have developed a unique approach and technique for LGS with no buttress stapling and without oversewing. After 102 operations there have been no leaks and late complications.

The Effects of Intraoperative Esmolol Infusion on the Postoperative Pain and Hemodynamic Stability after Rhinoplasty.
Esmolol an ultrashort acting cardioselective β1-adrenergic receptor antagonist), has been successfully employed for perioperative sympatholysis. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that perioperative esmolol administration resulted in decreased postoperative pain and improves the hemodynamic balance in patients with rhinoplasty. ⋯ Intraoperative esmolol infusion is a valid method to reduce postoperative pain, it provide lesser need to analgesics and hemodynamic stability in first 3 hours of post rhinoplasty surgery.

Evaluation of Platelet Indices and Red Cell Distribution Width as New Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis.
Debate around the value of laboratory tests in establishing the diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA) still continues. This prospective study aimed to investigate the changes in mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and red cell distribution width (RDW) with the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. ⋯ Increased PDW combined with elevated WBC and neutrophil counts maybe used as diagnostic tests in the cases of acute appendicitis, while MPV and RDW levels were not useful diagnostic markers.

Oxidative stress is one of the major causes of methotrexate induced lung injury (MILI). Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), which occurs naturally in human food, has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this study was to research the potential protective role of ALA on MILI in rats. ⋯ Oxidative damage of MTX in rat lung is partially reduced when combined with ALA.

The Effectiveness of Bariatric Surgery for Chinese Obesity in 2 Years: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review.
Bariatric surgery is becoming an acceptable option for treatment of obesity worldwide, but there is no systemic review and meta-analysis focusing on obese patients in China. This study is to quantify the overall effects of bariatric surgery for Chinese obesity using up-to-date, comprehensive data. ⋯ Bariatric surgery provides substantial metabolic effects for Chinese morbid obese adults at least in a relative short term. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials with long follow-up periods are needed to provide more reliable evidence.
