Randomized Controlled Trial
Length of postanesthetic care unit stay in elderly patients after general anesthesia: a randomized controlled trial comparing desflurane and sevoflurane.
The purpose of this study was to compare the length of postanesthetic care unit (PACU) stay and recovery profiles of elderly patients after general anesthesia between sevoflurane and desflurane. ⋯ Desflurane was more associated with a faster early recovery (time to open the eyes and follow commands) than sevoflurane in elderly patients after general anesthesia. However, the length of PACU stay was similar in both groups.

Comparison of postoperative analgesic efficacy of intraoperative single-dose intravenous administration of dexketoprofen trometamol and diclofenac sodium in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
The aim of this study is to compare the effects of intravenous single-dose dexketoprofen trometamol and diclofenac sodium 30 minutes before the end of the surgery on relief of postoperative pain in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. ⋯ In our study, administration of intravenous single-dose dexketoprofen trometamol 30 minutes before the end of surgery provided effective analgesia with reduced consumption of opioids and requirement for rescue analgesic compared with diclofenac sodium in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. For this reason, we believe that, as a part of multimodal analgesia, dexketoprofen trometamol provides more effective analgesia than diclofenac sodium in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

The intraoperative therapeutic equivalence of balanced vs saline-based 6% hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 and their influence on perioperative acid-base status and renal functions.
This study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic equivalence of balanced 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 130/0.4 (Tetraspan) vs saline-based 6% HES 130/0.4 (Voluven) regarding the volume effect and the effect on acid-base status and renal functions in patients undergoing major urologic procedures. ⋯ Both balanced 6% HES 130/0.4 (Tetraspan) and saline-based 6% HES 130/0.4 (Voluven) were equally effective for hemodynamic stabilization of patients undergoing major urologic procedures without any significant impact on acid-base status or renal functions.

Effects of ultrasound-guided stellate ganglion block on autonomic nervous function during CO2-pneumoperitoneum: A randomized double-blind control trial.
CO2-pneumoperitoneum can cause sympathetic nerve activity increased and is likely to causes severe stress-related homeostatic disorders. ⋯ Ultrasound-guided RSGB inhibited CO2-pneumoperitoneum-induced sympathetic neural excitation, upregulated vagal nerve stimulation and maintained stable autonomic nervous function.

Comparative Study
Comparative analysis of respiratory muscle strength before and after bariatric surgery using 5 different predictive equations.
Obesity has detrimental effects on general health and respiratory function. This study aimed to evaluate respiratory muscle strength in the morbidly obese population, before and after bariatric surgery, and to compare these estimates with the predictive values using different mathematical equations available. ⋯ Of the 5 mathematical equations studied, that of Enright and colleagues was found best suitable for predicting the MIP in the obese population studied.
