ReviewDemystifying α-gal syndrome: identification and risk management in the perioperative setting.
α-Gal syndrome is among a vexing perioperative consideration for anesthesiologists. Commonly referred to as 'red meat allergy', α-Gal syndrome is precipitated by a lone star tick bite resulting in the formation of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies against the tick salivary glycoproteins and noncatarrhine mammalian tissue. ⋯ With the increasing prevalence and identification of α-Gal syndrome, a safe and tailored perioperative process is needed to integrate a pathway that involves multidisciplinary communication, robust information sharing platform, and a structured peri-procedure management.

ReviewOutpatient surgery for the inpatient: an introduction to postacute care.
This article considers how postacute care (PAC) facilities such as skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehabilitation facilities and long-term care hospitals could represent an opportunity for outpatient surgical facilities to improve patient care. In order to understand how these facilities interact with outpatient surgical services, it is first necessary to understand the types of facilities that provide PAC. ⋯ PAC facilities are inpatient facilities focused on the rehabilitation of patients recovering from an acute illness or surgical intervention. This article seeks to provide ambulatory practitioners a fundamental understanding of PAC as a starting point for future collaborative efforts with PAC facilities; improving care for patients referred to and from PAC facilities for outpatient surgical care.

ReviewManagement of postoperative nausea and vomiting in adults: current controversies.
Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) continue to plague the surgical patient population with an adverse impact on postoperative outcomes. The aim of this review is to critically assess current evidence for PONV management, including studies evaluating baseline risk reduction and antiemetic prophylaxis, to provide a pragmatic approach to prevention and treatment of PONV in routine clinical practice. ⋯ This review provides a practical approach to PONV prevention based on recent literature.
