ReviewExtension of patient safety initiatives to perioperative care.
Patient safety has significantly improved during the intraoperative period thanks to the anesthesiologists, surgeons, and nurses. Nowadays, it is within the perioperative period where most of the preventable harm happened to the surgical patient. We aim to highlight the main issues and efforts to improve perioperative patient safety focusing and the relation to intraoperative safety strategies. ⋯ Any patient safety strategy to be implemented needs to be framed beyond the operating room and include in the intervention the whole perioperative period.

ReviewDevelopment and implementation of databases to track patient and safety outcomes.
Recent advancements in big data analytical tools and large patient databases have expanded tremendously the opportunities to track patient and safety outcomes.We discuss the strengths and limitations of large databases and implementation in practice with a focus on the current opportunities to use technological advancements to improve patient safety. ⋯ Patient safety research using large databases can provide actionable insights to improve outcomes in the perioperative setting. As datasets and methods to gain insights from those continue to grow, adopting novel technologies to implement personalized quality assurance initiatives can significantly improve patient care.
