Patients with head and neck cancer often have multiple risk factors for coronary artery disease. Yet, little is known about the incidence of postoperative myocardial injury after major head and neck cancer surgery and its clinical relevance. The aim of this study was to determine the risk of postoperative myocardial injury in patients undergoing major head and neck cancer surgery. ⋯ Patients who undergo major head and neck cancer surgery are at significant risk for postoperative myocardial injury, which is a strong predictor of 60-day mortality after surgery. Monitoring of myocardial injury during the first postoperative days, as well as optimizing preventive cardiac care, may be helpful to reduce postoperative mortality rates.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes after supracricoid laryngectomy (SCL) as an alternative to total laryngectomy (TL) for treatment of laryngeal cancer. ⋯ Supracricoid laryngectomy is effective for managing laryngeal cancer. Modification of the technique to permit resection of both arytenoids is possible in select patients.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare clinical entity in which secondary osteomalacia is induced by tumor-related products. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) mRNA is overexpressed in the tumor tissue, leading to impaired reabsorption of phosphorus in the renal tubules and hypophosphatemia. Curative treatment is considered to be total resection of the tumor. ⋯ We discuss the clinical features and treatment options for this rare disease.

Dexamethasone prophylaxis before thyroidectomy to reduce postoperative nausea, pain, and vocal dysfunction: a randomized clinical controlled trial.
The objective of this 2-arm, double-blind, randomized, controlled study was to assess the effects of a preoperative single dose steroid on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), pain, and vocal function after thyroidectomy for benign disease. ⋯ Dexamethasone (8 mg IV) is a safe and effective method to reduce PONV and pain after thyroid resection and should be used routinely.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between postsurgical neck (⁹⁹m) technetium ((⁹⁹m) Tc)-pertechnetate uptake and the rate of successful remnant ablation after radioiodine treatment in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). ⋯ The (⁹⁹m) Tc-pertechnetate scintigraphy is a simple and feasible tool to evaluate thyroid remnants and to predict radioiodine ablation results in patients with DTC.
