Sex difference in response to non-small cell lung cancer immunotherapy: an updated meta-analysis.
Studying sex differences in the efficacy of immunotherapy may contribute to the practice of the precision medicine, especially in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a kind of cancer with sexual bimorphism. ⋯ Compared to chemotherapy, immunotherapy can improve the prognosis of patients with advanced NSCLC. Meanwhile, there are sex differences in the efficacy of immunotherapy.KEY MESSAGECompared to chemotherapy, immunotherapy can improve the prognosis of patients with advanced NSCLC.The most interesting thing in this study is that immunotherapy showed significant sex differences in the treatment of squamous NSCLC.

Effects of perioperative dexmedetomidine infusion on renal function and microcirculation in kidney transplant recipients: a randomised controlled trial.
Ischemia-reperfusion injury affects postoperative transplanted kidney function in kidney transplant recipients. Dexmedetomidine was reported to attenuate ischemia-reperfusion injury and improve microcirculation, but its propensity to cause bradycardia and hypotension may adversely affect microcirculation. This study investigated the effect of dexmedetomidine on postoperative renal function and sublingual microcirculation in kidney recipients. ⋯ We found that early postoperative renal function was better in kidney transplant recipients receiving dexmedetomidine infusion, but total vessel density was not significantly different between the intervention and control groups. Key messagesIschemia-reperfusion injury affects postoperative transplanted kidney function, and dexmedetomidine was reported to attenuate ischemia-reperfusion injury and improve microcirculation in other clinical conditions.This study showed that early postoperative renal function was better in kidney transplant recipients receiving dexmedetomidine.Dexmedetomidine's side effect of bradycardia and hypotension may affect microcirculation, our results revealed that the perioperative sublingual microcirculation did not differ significantly in kidney transplant recipients receiving dexmedetomidine.

Augmented reality as a novel approach for addiction treatment: development of a smoking cessation app.
Augmented reality (AR) is a rapidly developing technology that has substantial potential as a novel approach for addiction treatment, including tobacco use. AR can facilitate the delivery of cue exposure therapy (CET) such that individuals can experience the treatment in their natural environments as viewed via a smartphone screen, addressing the limited generalizbility of extinction learning. Previously, our team developed a basic AR app for smoking cessation and demonstrated the necessary mechanisms for CET. Specifically, we showed that the AR smoking cues, compared to neutral cues, elicited substantial cue reactivity (i.e. increased urge) and that repeated exposure to the AR smoking cues reduced urge (i.e. extinction) in a laboratory setting. Here we report the next step in the systematic development of the AR app, in which we assessed the usability and acceptability of the app among daily smokers in their natural environments. ⋯ These findings set the stage for a randomized controlled trial testing the AR app as an adjuvant therapy for treating tobacco dependence, with potential applicability to other substances. KEY MESSAGEThis study found that the augmented reality (AR) smartphone application that utlized cue exposure treatment for smoking cessation was perceived as easy to use and learn in the natural, day-to-day environment of daily smokers. Findings set the stage for a larger clinical trial testing the AR app as an adjuvant therapy for treating tobacco dependence, with potential applicability to other addictive behaviors.

Mindfulness-based interventions for non-affective psychosis: a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis.
Although mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are routinely used in clinical practice, a comprehensive synthesis of the effectiveness of MBIs for non-affective psychosis has yet to be conducted. The aim of the present review and meta-analysis was to investigate the effectiveness of MBIs including those with mindfulness as an active treatment component for alleviating symptoms of psychosis to inform future clinical practice. ⋯ Results suggest that short-term MBIs can be beneficial for non-affective psychosis. Future research is needed to test the efficacy and safety of dedicated MBIs for this population group over a longer term. KEY MESSAGESSchizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, also known as non-affective psychosis, is the most chronic and debilitating type of psychosis, seriously affecting every aspect of a person's life, including social, occupational, or general functioning.The aim of the current systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate formerly unexamined questions regarding the clinical significance of MBIs including yoga as an increasingly utilized, conceptualized psychological intervention on overall psychotic symptoms for people with non-affective psychosis.No serious adverse events were reported in the studies, suggesting that MBIs may be safe interventions, while there is robust evidence to support the view that MBIs are beneficial to young people in particular.

The fully engaged inspiratory muscle training reduces postoperative pulmonary complications rate and increased respiratory muscle function in patients with upper abdominal surgery: a randomized controlled trial.
Upper abdominal surgical treatment may reduce respiratory muscle function and mucociliary clearance, which might be a cause of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). Threshold inspiratory muscle training (IMT) may serve as an effective modality to improve respiratory muscle strength and endurance in patients. However, whether this training could help patients with upper abdominal surgery remains to be determined. The aim of the present investigation was to determine the effect of a fully engaged IMT on PPCs and respiratory function in patients undergoing upper abdominal surgery. We hypothesized that the fully engaged IMT could reduce PPCs and improve respiratory muscle function in patients with upper abdominal surgery. ⋯ The results from this study revealed that IMT provided positive effects on parameters associated with the respiratory muscle function and reduced the incidence of PPCs. We propose that fully engaged IMT should be a part of clinical management in patients with upper abdominal surgery.KEY MESSAGESThe fully engaged inspiratory muscle training reduces postoperative pulmonary complications rate in patients with upper abdominal surgery.The fully engaged inspiratory muscle training increases maximal inspiratory pressure in patients with upper abdominal surgery.The fully engaged inspiratory muscle training increases diaphragm function in patients with upper abdominal surgery.The fully engaged inspiratory muscle training increases the quality of life in patients with upper abdominal surgery.
