This study aimed to explore the prognostic value of the lymphocyte (LYM)-to-white blood cell (WBC) ratio (LWR) in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis (DLC). ⋯ Our findings indicate that a lower LWR is an independent factor for unfavourable outcomes and may serve as a potential novel prognostic predictor in patients with DLC.KEY MESSAGESThis study is the first report on the prognostic value of the lymphocyte (LYM)-to-white blood cell (WBC) ratio (LWR) in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis (DLC).Decreased LWR is an independent factor for adverse outcomes in patients with DLC.

It is essential to assess the cancer risk for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Comparing gene expression data from patients with lung cancer (a total of 506 samples) and those with cancer-adjacent normal lung tissues (a total of 370 samples), we generated a qualitative transcriptional signature consisting of 2046 gene pairs. The signature was verified in an evaluation dataset comprising 18 subjects with severe disease and 52 subjects with moderate disease (Wilcoxon rank-sum test; p = 7.33 × 10-5). ⋯ KEY MESSAGESA cancer risk assessment signature was identified in patients with COPD. The signature is insensitive to batch effects and is well verified. COPD key genes identified in this study might play a crucial role in TCM treatment and cancer prevention.

Insulin is temperature sensitive as high temperatures reduce its potency. Refrigeration for insulin storage is still needed but households in remote areas do not have refrigerators. Also, the electricity supply is usually affected by natural disasters. We aim to examine the temperature-reducing efficacy of cooling devices in hot-humid conditions. ⋯ Traditional low-cost devices, such as clay pots, reduce storage temperatures to or close to room temperature in hot-humid climates. This study provides some guidance for insulin storage in hot-humid environments.

Anaemia is frequent in patients with cardiovascular disease and is significantly associated with poor prognosis. However, the prognostic significance of anaemia in hypertensive crisis remains unknown. We conducted this study to determine whether anaemia is a risk factor for all-cause mortality in patients with hypertensive crisis visiting the emergency department (ED). ⋯ Anaemia is independently associated with 3-year all-cause mortality in patients with hypertensive crisis. A comprehensive therapeutic approach through more in-depth examination and close follow up are required for patients with hypertensive crisis with anaemia.KEY MESSAGESAnaemia is independently associated with 3-year all-cause mortality in patients with hypertensive crisis.A comprehensive therapeutic approach through more in-depth examination and close follow up are required for patients with hypertensive crisis with anaemia.

Multiple assessment tools are used in arthroscopic training and play an important role in feedback. However, it is not fully recognized as to the standard way to apply these tools. Our study aimed to investigate the use of assessment tools in arthroscopic training and determine whether there is an optimal way to apply various assessment tools in arthroscopic training. ⋯ Level III, systematic review of level I to III studies. Key messagesBoth subjective and objective assessment tools can be used as feedback for basic arthroscopic skill training.Combined use of subjective and objective assessment tools can be applied to more situations and skills and can be the optimal way for assessment.
