Although a study found a significant increase in serum hedgehog interacting protein (HHIP) concentrations in impaired fasting blood glucose, impaired glucose tolerance and newly diagnosed T2DM patients, the variation in circulating HHIP levels in obese individuals remains unknown. ⋯ Our findings support HHIP as a potential biomarker for predicting obesity and IR. In addition, drugs targeting HHIP may be a new strategy to treat obesity.

Decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) during Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) treatment remains a concern, and few patients experience partial recovery of eGFR. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for eGFR recovery in patients with and without hypertriglyceridemia. ⋯ eGFR partially recovered in patients without hypertriglyceridemia during TDF treatment, and TG regulation might be a useful strategy to hinder renal function decline, although larger, confirmatory studies are necessary to validate our findings.Key messagesFor patients with normal triglyceride, eGFR declined significantly at the first year of TDF treatment, then gradually recovered during the subsequent two years, and eGFR was negatively correlated with TG. Baseline eGFR <90 mL/(min·1.73 m2) and age were independent risk factors for eGFR recovery.

The exploration of non-invasive biomarkers for assessing tumor response is critical to optimize treatment decisions. In this study, we aimed at determining the potential role of RAI14 in the early diagnosis and evaluation of chemotherapy efficacy in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). ⋯ Recent studies showed that RAI14 has a complementary effect to CA15-3 and a test combining the two parameters can improve the detection rate of early triple-negative breast cancer. At the same time, RAI14 plays a more important role in chemotherapy monitoring than CA15-3 as the change in its concentration is in line with the tumor volume variation. Taken together, RAI14 is a reliable novel marker in the early diagnosis and chemotherapy monitoring of triple-negative breast cancer.

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are a group of rare neuroendocrine tumors. Dysglycemia has been observed in patients with PPGLs in some small case series. However, there is limited information available on the factors associated with development and resolution of dysglycemia in these patients. ⋯ Age, hypertension, and the 24hU-E concentration are risk factors for preoperative dysglycemia. Removal of PPGLs can improve dysglycemia in most patients, and postoperative remission of dysglycemia is associated with the preoperative tumor diameter. These results are important for risk assessment and for selecting optimal therapies in patients with dysglycemia in PPGLs.KEY MESSAGESThere have been insufficient data to identify factors associated with development and resolution of dysglycemia in patients with PPGLs.Our results show that approximately half of the patients with PPGLs develop dysglycemia; age, hypertension, and the 24hU-E concentration are risk factors for preoperative dysglycemia.Removal of the PPGLs improves dysglycemia in a majority of patients, and a large preoperative tumor diameter is associated with remission of dysglycemia after surgery.

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had devastating consequences for persons with opioid use disorder (OUD). Yet, little is known about how people seeking treatment for OUD perceive the risks of COVID-19 and how their perception interplays with their health behaviours. ⋯ Our study provides insight into COVID-19 prevention measures as well as vaccination perceptions and hesitancy among people who received treatment for OUD.Key messagesParticipants expressed diverse perceptions of the seriousness of COVID-19, with some taking precautions to mitigate their chances of acquiring COVID-19 and others perceiving that the risk of contracting COVID-19 was less than the risk of overdosing.Substance use, social isolation, vaccine hesitancy and COVID-19 risk behaviours should be studied as co-occurring phenomena that have potentially overlapping relationships that can influence behaviours that impact health and well-being.
