This study aims to evaluate the prognostic value of m6A-associated long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and their interaction with tumour microenvironment in thyroid cancer (THCA). ⋯ Eleven of the m6A-associated lncRNAs were identified as a risk model to predict clinical outcomes and provide a novel and efficient immunotherapeutic strategy for THCA patients.Key messagesm6A-associated lncRNAs can be used to predict the clinical outcomes of thyroid cancer patients. An m6A-associated lncRNAs risk model, which can accurately evaluate the immune status and risk stratification in individual thyroid cancer patients, was established.Knockdown/overexpression of representative lncRNAs in the risk model significantly affected the proliferation and migration of papillary thyroid cancer cells.

Surgery, the treatment of choice for parotid pleomorphic adenoma (PA), is associated with facial nerve palsy and decreased quality of life. Re-operation for PA recurrence (rPA) significantly increases these risks and constitutes a dilemma for both patient and surgeon. Factors influencing the success of re-operation, as well as the self-reported satisfaction of both sides, have yet to be addressed in the literature. This study aims to improve upon the decision-making schedule in PA re-operations, based on patient expectations, imaging, and concordance with the first operative report (FOpR). ⋯ Accurate pre-operative imaging impacted surgeon satisfaction. The impact of the FOpR on re-operation technicalities and patient satisfaction was minor. Imaging precision should be improved to streamline the decision-making process of PA re-operation. This article proposes suggestions for a future decision-making algorithm as a starting point for a prospective study.Key messagesAccurate pre-operative imaging impacts both surgeon and patient satisfaction. There is no significant relationship between the accuracy of the first operative report and surgeon and patient satisfaction. There is a statistically significant relationship between patient and surgeon satisfaction.

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the standard surgical treatment for benign prostate enlargement (BPE). Photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) is an alternative, but there is limited real-life evidence of PVP risks. ⋯ PVP is associated with lower postoperative bleeding risk but higher long-term reoperation risk than TURP. Patients with high bleeding risk and a low likelihood of needing reoperation appear most suitable for laser vaporization.KEY MESSAGEPVP is associated with lower postoperative bleeding risk but higher long-term reoperation risk than TURP. PVP appears an attractive treatment option, especially for patients with high bleeding risk and a low likelihood of needing a reoperation.

Vitamin A has multiple functions in the human body, being involved in growth, epithelial differentiation, vision, immune function and reproduction. While normal spermatogenesis is influenced by several factors, it requires vitamin A. Systemic isotretinoin is a vitamin A derivative that is used in the treatment of many dermatological diseases, especially acne vulgaris (AV). There is limited research on the changes in semen parameters after systemic isotretinoin therapy in humans. Our study investigates the presence of varicoceles in patients undergoing systemic isotretinoin therapy for AV and examines whether there were any changes in the semen parameters before and after treatment. ⋯ Systemic isotretinoin therapy negatively affects sperm morphology, but has positive effect on other semen parameters, and these changes in semen parameters occur more frequently in patients with varicoceles.KEY MESSAGESAcne vulgaris is a very common disease and systemic isotretinoin is used as the most effective agent in its treatment.Systemic isotretinoin positively affects semen parameters except sperm morphology.Changes in semen parameters are more common in patients with varicocele.

It is unknown which features of unipolar atrial electrogram (U-AEGM) morphology are affected by ageing and whether age-related changes in U-AEGM morphology are equally distributed throughout the right and left atria. ⋯ Age-related remodeling particularly affects BB as indicated by the decreased amount of non-SP at this location in the elderly.Key MessagesAgeing preferentially affects the morphology of unipolar atrial electrograms recorded at Bachmann's bundle. At Bachmann's bundle, the proportion of short double-, long double- and fractionated potentials increase during ageing at the expense of a decrease in the proportion of single potentials, reflecting aggravation of abnormalities in conduction. The increase in abnormal unipolar atrial electrograms at Bachmann's bundle during ageing supports the concept that Bachmann's bundle may play an important role in development of age-related arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation.
