Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are a group of rare neuroendocrine tumors. Dysglycemia has been observed in patients with PPGLs in some small case series. However, there is limited information available on the factors associated with development and resolution of dysglycemia in these patients. ⋯ Age, hypertension, and the 24hU-E concentration are risk factors for preoperative dysglycemia. Removal of PPGLs can improve dysglycemia in most patients, and postoperative remission of dysglycemia is associated with the preoperative tumor diameter. These results are important for risk assessment and for selecting optimal therapies in patients with dysglycemia in PPGLs.KEY MESSAGESThere have been insufficient data to identify factors associated with development and resolution of dysglycemia in patients with PPGLs.Our results show that approximately half of the patients with PPGLs develop dysglycemia; age, hypertension, and the 24hU-E concentration are risk factors for preoperative dysglycemia.Removal of the PPGLs improves dysglycemia in a majority of patients, and a large preoperative tumor diameter is associated with remission of dysglycemia after surgery.

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in significant changes to health care delivery and the patient's experience in hospital. Changes for those who contracted COVID-19 or were close contacts included isolation and quarantine, visitor restrictions and changes to usual models of care to reduce viral transmission. Traditional models of inpatient rehabilitation utilise communal spaces (e.g. shared gyms and dining rooms) and involve a multidisciplinary team interacting with the patient daily. ⋯ This study establishes key areas that should be considered by rehabilitation units globally to adjust traditional models which are not suitable in this pandemic. Strategies to mitigate the impact of isolation include providing training to increase use of technologies such as tablet devices, increased staff social engagement to reduce isolation and tailoring the environment to suit specific patient groups.KEY MESSAGESCOVID-19 related isolation and quarantine has a significant and unique impact on patients with cognitive and physical impairments such as those in inpatient rehabilitation. Patients who are required to isolate in inpatient settings expressed a desire for compensatory increased social interaction from staff and required specific assistance with basic daily tasks while isolated. The study makes key recommendations for other rehabilitation units to integrate into their approach for managing patients required to isolate or quarantine.

Thyroid nodules are a kind of common endocrine system disease, with approximately 5% of them developing into malignant lesions, the most common of which belong to differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). Accurate differential diagnosis using reliable methods and targeted treatment of benign and malignant thyroid nodules are of great significance to improve patient outcomes. This study mainly investigates the diagnostic value of thyroglobulin (Tg) and anti-thyroglobulin antibody (anti-TgAb) combined with emission computed tomography (ECT) in the adjuvant diagnosis DTC. ⋯ The combination of Tg. anti-TgAb, and RNI can effectively improve the diagnostic accuracy of DTC and reduce the missed diagnosis rate, which has important reference significance for clinical diagnosis and treatment of TC.

Bladder cancer accounts for the most common type of urologic malignancy and presents high recurrence rate after surgical resection and adjuvant intravesical therapy. We aim to search for an early diagnostic biomarker in serum for bladder cancer in this study. ⋯ The three-miRNA signature we constructed has favorable diagnostic capacity and may be a promising non-invasive biomarker in the early diagnosis of bladder cancer.KEY MESSAGESThere is still no clinical utilization of serum miRNAs in the early detection of bladder cancer.We screened and constructed a three-miRNA signature with the sensitivity of 86.90% and specificity of 77.38% which may be a promising non-invasive biomarker in the early diagnosis of bladder cancer.

The effect of liposomes bi-functionalized with phosphatidic acid and with a synthetic peptide derived from human apolipoprotein E has been evaluated on the aggregation features of different amyloidogenic proteins: human Amyloid β1-40 (Aβ1-40), transthyretin (TTR) variant S52P, human β2microglobulin (β2m) variants ΔN6 and D76N, Serum Amyloid A (SAA). ⋯ Thus, multifunctional liposomes perform as pharmacological chaperones with anti-amyloidogenic activity, with a promising potential for the treatment of a number of protein-misfolding diseases.Key messageAmyloidosis is a group of diseases, each due to a specific protein misfolding.Anti-amyloidogenic nanoparticles have been gaining the utmost importance as a potential treatment for protein misfolding disorders.Liposomes bi-functionalized with phosphatidic acid and with a synthetic peptide derived from human apolipoprotein E showed anti-amyloidogenic activity.
