Genetic variants in BCMO1 and CD36 are associated with plasma lutein concentrations and macular pigment optical density in humans.
Lutein is recovered at high concentration in the human macula lutea. Recent studies suggest that this micronutrient might be implicated in prevention of age-related macular degeneration. ⋯ these results suggest that BCMO1 and CD36 are implicated in plasma and retina concentrations of lutein and that genetic variants in these genes can modulate blood and retina concentrations of lutein.

BACJGROUND: the red cell distribution width (RDW) in ICU patients has never been investigated. ⋯ we found a graded independent relation between higher RDW and adverse outcomes in ICU patients. RDW has the potentially clinical utility to predict outcome in ICU patients.

The effectiveness of sublingual and subcutaneous immunotherapy with pollen extracts appeared virtually equal in daily medical routine. Due to the advantageous safety profile, the sublingual application may be favorable.

Patients with breast cancer that becomes resistant to taxanes and anthracyclines experience considerable morbidity and mortality. The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of ixabepilone for the treatment of patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer that is refractory or resistant to taxanes and anthracyclines. ⋯ The conclusion of this review is that ixabepilone demonstrated a high efficacy in combination with capecitabine and as a single agent in breast cancer refractory to taxanes and anthracyclines. The clinical activity of ixabepilone combined with bevacizumab for advanced breast cancer was very promising.
