Measuring quality of life in men with prostate cancer using the functional assessment of cancer therapy-prostate instrument.
As the incidence of prostate cancer in the United States exceeds 330,000 in 1997, increasingly more men are faced with treatment choices for which there is no clear approach. At every stage of disease, these treatment choices may involve clinically equivalent modalities that differ in side effects and impact upon quality of life (QOL). Comprehensive, yet efficient, questionnaires are needed to measure QOL in patients with prostate cancer. ⋯ Our findings support use of the FACT-P as a meaningful component of QOL evaluation in men undergoing therapy for prostate cancer.

Color Doppler ultrasound criteria to diagnose varicoceles: correlation of a new scoring system with physical examination.
Color Doppler ultrasound (CDU) diagnostic criteria for varicoceles are poorly defined, and the role of CDU in diagnosing varicoceles is controversial. The purpose of this study is to assess the diagnostic accuracy of CDU for varicoceles compared to physical examination. ⋯ Using the proposed new scoring system, CDU has been shown to be a reliable and accurate method of diagnosis for varicoceles compared to the current reference standard physical examination. CDU has the advantages of being able to objectively examine venous plexus and measure blood flow parameters and to be less observer-dependent than physical examination.

Spontaneous nontraumatic rupture of a contracted kidney with subcapsular and perirenal hematoma in a patient receiving chronic hemodialysis.
Spontaneous renal bleeding with diversion of blood into the subcapsular and/or perinephric spaces in a patient on chronic hemodialysis is a very rare clinical entity. We describe a patient on chronic hemodialysis in whom a spontaneous renal subcapsular hematoma and perirenal hemorrhage developed in a contracted kidney.

Intravesical immunoprophylaxis in recurrent superficial bladder cancer (Stage T1): multicenter trial comparing bacille Calmette-Guérin and interferon-alpha.
To estimate and compare recurrence rates, index of recurrence, and disease-free interval in patients with superficial recurrent bladder cancer receiving bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) or interferon (IFN) for immunoprophylaxis. ⋯ According to our trial, BCG remains the most efficacious agent for immunoprophylaxis of recurrent superficial bladder tumors.

Clinical benefits of bicalutamide compared with flutamide in combined androgen blockade for patients with advanced prostatic carcinoma: final report of a double-blind, randomized, multicenter trial. Casodex Combination Study Group.
To compare the efficacy and tolerability of bicalutamide and flutamide, each combined with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LHRH-A) therapy, in patients with metastatic (Stage D2) prostate cancer. ⋯ With a median follow-up time of 160 weeks, the combination of bicalutamide plus LHRH-A was well tolerated and had equivalent time to progression and survival compared with flutamide plus LHRH-A. Treatment with bicalutamide plus LHRH-A resulted in longer median survival than treatment with flutamide plus LHRH-A.
