To explore whether socioeconomic status (SES) was associated with health-related quality of life (HRQL) and health care use among long-term prostate cancer survivors. ⋯ Prostate cancer survivors with a low SES exhibited a worse mental but not physical HRQL than those with a higher SES. Long-term health outcomes of patients with low SES may be maximized by paying extra attention to comorbid conditions.

To describe a technique to facilitate the urethral stump exposure and aid the suture placement of vesicourethral anastomosis during laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. ⋯ Use of a Foley catheter for laparoscopic vesicourethral anastomosis is simple and easy and provided good surgical results in our experience.

To evaluate the rate and duration of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response to high-dose bicalutamide (150 mg) in nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer patients and its impact on metastasis-free survival. ⋯ High-dose bicalutamide can induce a second response in almost half of castration-resistant prostate cancer patients without metastasis. The duration of response is more than 1.5 years on average and responders have prolonged metastasis-free survival.

Gunshot wounds (GSW) affecting the genitourinary (GU) system in civilians are uncommon. This study describes the incidence, anatomic distribution, demographics, associated injuries, management, and outcomes after civilian GU GSW. ⋯ GU injury occurred in 10.5% of 2941 civilian GSW patients. Associated injuries were very common, with many cases involving multiple organs. Most injuries (90%) were managed surgically. Mortality is usually the result of associated nongenitourinary injuries. A high index of suspicion for injuries affecting other organs is necessary in managing GU GSW trauma patients.

Microparticulate ice slurry for renal hypothermia: laparoscopic partial nephrectomy in a porcine model.
Previously, we described the feasibility of renal hypothermia using microparticulate ice slurry during laparoscopy. In the present study, we compared surface cooling with the ice slurry versus near-frozen saline or warm ischemia (WI) during laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) in a porcine model. ⋯ Ice slurry provides superior renal cooling compared with near-frozen saline during LPN without associated core hypothermia.
