To assess the rate and predictive factors of urinary retention after iodine 125 brachytherapy for localized prostate cancer. ⋯ Catheterization for acute urinary retention after brachytherapy is an uncommon event. Our data suggest that preimplant US-based prostate volume and IPSS are the strongest predictors for catheterization. Catheterized patients who are refractory to medical therapy can safely undergo a minimal TUR-P.

To provide a rational approach to the diagnosis and management of blunt scrotal trauma to aid clinicians in the selection of patients for surgical exploration. ⋯ Patients presenting after blunt scrotal trauma with clinical hematocele should progress directly to exploration. The remainder should undergo scrotal ultrasonography. Those with large hematoceles or suspected rupture on ultrasonography should also proceed to exploration. Those without hematocele, a clearly distinct tunica albuginea, and a lack of fracture planes within the testes are a subgroup that can be successfully treated conservatively.

To investigate the association between a cytochrome P450 17alpha-hydroxylase gene (CYP17) polymorphism and survival in Caucasian patients with androgen-independent prostate cancer (AIPC). ⋯ These results suggest that the CYP17 polymorphism is associated with overall survival in patients with AIPC.

To compare high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) with spontaneous ventilation (SV) in general anesthesia for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). ⋯ This study supports the use of HFJV as a ventilation mode for ESWL when general anesthesia is chosen. Similar stone fragmentation rates can be achieved with fewer shocks, which may have beneficial effects, such as less pain and nausea, requiring further study.

To evaluate the prevalence of pelvic floor dysfunction in women with interstitial cystitis (IC). ⋯ Women with IC may have pelvic floor dysfunction, as noted in this population in which 87% had levator pain upon examination. If pelvic floor dysfunction is diagnosed in IC patients, then therapy targeting the pelvic floor musculature may be considered as part of a multimodality approach to treating IC.
