Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Predictors of local adverse effects caused by topical tretinoin cream 0·1% in the Veterans Affairs Topical Tretinoin Chemoprevention trial.
Topical tretinoin is commonly prescribed, but its frequent adverse effects are barriers to use. Predictors of resistance or susceptibility to retinoid irritation are not known. ⋯ In this study population, the common indications of topical tretinoin treatment were associated with lower risks of adverse effects. The concurrent use of other topical medications may worsen irritation caused by tretinoin.

Psoriasis is associated with unhealthy lifestyle behaviours which contribute to psoriasis onset and severity. Health professionals who manage patients with psoriasis are well placed to support lifestyle change but few feel confident to do so. Little is known about the extent to which health promotion and lifestyle behaviour change (LBC) skills are included within post-qualification training curricula. ⋯ Development of post-qualification curricula would ensure health professionals are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to support LBC for patients with psoriasis. This is of particular relevance, given the evidence linking unhealthy lifestyles with psoriasis outcomes.

Lyme borreliosis has a broad spectrum of clinical presentations involving the skin, joints and nervous system. The variable manifestations have been attributed to different Borrelia genospecies but genotyping required culture or fresh tissue. However, in dermatology practice, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded biopsies are used for dermatopathological examination. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu latu has been established on such specimens, but studies attempting genotyping of subspecies or strains are lacking. ⋯ Genotyping of Borrelia can be easily implemented in a routine dermatopathology setting, especially as a fast method to confirm early cutaneous borreliosis. Genotyping could also enable earlier treatment of patients infected with invasive strains.
