Storage time of red blood cells among ICU patients with septic shock.
We aimed to describe the exposure to blood transfusions and mortality among patients with septic shock. ⋯ Patients with septic shock were transfused both before and after ICU. Exposure to blood of less than 7 days or more than 24 days old were limited. We were not able to detect higher mortality among the limited number of patients with septic shock transfused with very fresh or very old blood.

Randomized Controlled TrialSpinal and epidural sufentanil and fentanyl in early labour.
The analgesic effect on labour pain of either spinal or epidural sufentanil or fentanyl was tested in a total of 80 primiparous parturients at an early phase of the delivery. The aim of the study was to compare the level of analgesia achieved within 20 minutes. ⋯ In terms of a reduction of VAS score at 20 minutes, epidural sufentanil or fentanyl provide 63% and 60% of the analgesic effect of the corresponding spinal analgesia. Epidural sufentanil or fentanyl could be used in situations in which spinal/CSE administration is not possible or desired.

Impact of norepinephrine on right ventricular afterload and function in septic shock-a strain echocardiography study.
In this observational study, the effects of norepinephrine-induced changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP) on right ventricular (RV) systolic function, afterload and pulmonary haemodynamics were studied in septic shock patients. We hypothesised that RV systolic function improves at higher doses of norepinephrine/MAP levels. ⋯ Higher doses of norepinephrine to a target MAP of 90 mm Hg improved RV systolic function while RV afterload was not affected.

Observational StudyUse of social media for communicating about critical care topics: A Norwegian cross-sectional survey.
Social media (SoMe) might be an alternative platform for communicating critical care topics to implement evidence-based practice in the intensive care unit (ICU). This survey aims to describe ICU nurses' and physicians' use of SoMe in general, and their perception of using closed Facebook-groups for receiving content on critical care topics. ⋯ The majority of ICU nurses and physicians were active SoMe users, mainly for personal purposes, and Facebook was the most popular SoMe. Nurses used Facebook daily more frequent and were more positive toward content on critical care topics on Facebook than physicians. These findings might be relevant to customize future communication about critical care topics via SoMe.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyCombination of Perineural and Wound Infusion After Above Knee Amputation - A randomized, controlled multicenter study.
Post-operative pain after an above-knee amputation is often severe, and in the elderly patients the adverse effects of post-operative opioids are evident. We hypothesized that continuous perineural local anesthetic infusion (CPI) combined to a wound infusion will reduce acute pain and opioid consumption compared to placebo after above knee amputation. ⋯ A combination of continuous perineural and wound local anesthetic infusion seems to diminish the intensity of stump pain after above knee amputation.
