Multicenter StudyGenetic polymorphisms and prediction of chronic post-surgical pain after hysterectomy-a subgroup analysis of a multicenter cohort study.
Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) is a serious problem. Clinical and psychological variables have not been able to explain all observed variance in prevalence and severity of CPSP. The first objective is to determine the association between genetic polymorphisms and the prevalence of CPSP after hysterectomy. The second objective is to analyze if the implementation of genetic polymorphisms into a previously performed clinical and psychological predictor analysis on the development of CPSP after hysterectomy will improve its discriminatory power. ⋯ The rs4818 polymorphism within the COMT gene was associated with the prevalence of CPSP 3 months after hysterectomy, but the implementation of rs4818 into the prediction model did not significantly improve the chance of identifying hysterectomy patients at risk for CPSP.

Review Meta AnalysisQuinolones for sepsis. A protocol for a systematic review of randomised clinical trials with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.
Sepsis is a relatively common and deadly condition that constitutes a major challenge to the modern health care system. Quinolones are sometimes used in combination with beta-lactam antibiotics for sepsis, but no former systematic review has assessed the benefits and harms of quinolones in patients with sepsis. ⋯ This systematic review will clarify if there is evidence to support quinolones being part of the standard treatment for sepsis.

Review Comparative StudyRoutine vs on-demand blood sampling in critically ill patients-Protocol for a scoping review.
In intensive care units, blood sampling is done commonly as part of daily routine. It remains unknown whether this practice is associated with harms or benefits, as not all routine blood tests may be clinically indicated, and blood sampling done without specific indications may be problematic. Accordingly, we aim to assess the body of evidence regarding the usage of routine vs on-demand blood sampling in critically ill patients in a scoping review. ⋯ The outlined scoping review will provide an important overview on the current body of evidence regarding the use of daily routine vs on-demand blood sampling in critical care settings. The findings of this scoping review will guide further research.

Randomized Controlled TrialNeedle tip tracking for ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block procedures-An observer blinded, randomised, controlled, crossover study on a phantom model.
The Onvision needle tip tracking (NTT) is a new technology consisting of a needle with an ultrasound sensor close to the needle tip and a console for computerised signal processing. The aim of the study was to evaluate NTT technology during ultrasound-guided simulated peripheral nerve block procedures in a porcine phantom model. ⋯ The new NTT technology significantly reduced the procedure time and the number of hand movements for ultrasound-guided out-of-plane PNB procedures. No significant differences were found for the in-plane procedures.

Randomized Controlled TrialDoes intraperitoneal ropivacaine reduce postoperative inflammation? A prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study.
Postoperative inflammation is a common consequence of surgery and the ensuing stress response. Local anesthetics have anti-inflammatory properties. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate if LA administrated intraperitoneally perioperatively might inhibit expression of inflammatory cytokines. ⋯ In this small study, perioperative intraperitoneal ropivacaine did not reduce the systemic inflammatory response associated with major abdominal surgery. Total and free ropivacaine concentrations were below known toxic concentrations in humans.
