Observational StudyBedside Interpretation Of Simplified Continuous EEG After Cardiac Arrest.
Continuous EEG-monitoring (cEEG) in the ICU is recommended to assess prognosis and detect seizures after cardiac arrest but implementation is often limited by the lack of EEG-technicians and experts. The aim of the study was to assess ICU physicians ability to perform preliminary interpretations of a simplified cEEG in the post cardiac arrest setting. ⋯ After cardiac arrest, preliminary bedside interpretations of simplified cEEGs by trained ICU physicians may allow earlier detection of clinically relevant cEEG changes, prompting changes in patient management as well as additional evaluation by an EEG-expert. This strategy requires awareness of limitations of both the simplified electrode montage and the cEEG interpretations performed by ICU physicians. cEEG evaluation by an expert should not be delayed.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyChecklists in prehospital advanced airway management.
In pre-hospital care, pre-intubation checklists (PICL) are widely implemented as a safety measure and guidelines support their use. However, the true value of PICL among experienced airway providers is unknown. This study aims to explore possible benefits and disadvantages of PICL in the pre-hospital setting. ⋯ In this retrospective study, checklist use correlated with fewer attempts at intubation when securing the airway. Despite this, we found no association between checklist use and the overall TI success rate or the incidence of serious adverse events. Scene times were shorter without PICL.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyCombined epidural-general anaesthesia vs. general anaesthesia in neonatal gastrointestinal surgery: A randomised controlled trial.
Post-operative ileus is a frequent complication of gastrointestinal surgery under general anaesthesia. The aim of this study was to investigate whether combined epidural-general anaesthesia is associated with expedited gastrointestinal function recovery in neonates undergoing elective gastrointestinal surgery. ⋯ Combined epidural-general anaesthesia is associated with expedited gastrointestinal function recovery and a lower infection risk after gastrointestinal surgery in neonates.

The association between epidural analgesia and mortality in emergency abdominal surgery: A population-based cohort study.
Emergency abdominal surgery carries a considerable risk of mortality and post-operative complications, including pulmonary complications. In major elective surgery, epidural analgesia reduces mortality and pulmonary complications. We aimed to evaluate the association between epidural analgesia and mortality in emergency abdominal surgery. ⋯ In this population-based cohort study of adult patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery, we found that the use of epidural analgesia perioperatively was associated with a decreased risk of mortality in the adjusted analysis.

Comparative StudyClassical versus controlled rapid sequence induction and intubation in children with bleeding tonsils (a retrospective audit).
To determine whether bag-mask ventilation between induction of anaesthesia and tracheal intubation in children with post-tonsillectomy bleeding reduces the incidence of hypoxaemia and difficult direct laryngoscopy without increasing perioperative respiratory complications. ⋯ Controlled RSII had advantages over classical RSII in children with post-tonsillectomy bleeding and may become a strategic option in these patients to avoid hypoxaemia, difficult laryngoscopy and hypertension during induction of anaesthesia and tracheal intubation. Bag-mask ventilation in patients with bleeding tonsils did not lead to pulmonary morbidity.
