Review Meta AnalysisDoes the critical shoulder angle influence retear and functional outcome after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair? A systematic review and meta-analysis.
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the correlation between increased critical shoulder angle (CSA) and higher retear rates and functional outcomes after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR). ⋯ This systematic review and meta-analysis showed that CSA correlates highly with rotator cuff retear after ARCR. In addition, the postoperative retear rate of the rotator cuff increased with increased CSA. CSA appeared to not affect worse functional outcomes in patients after ARCR.

The majority of community-dwelling hip fracture patients return to independent living with minor increase in care needs: a prospective cohort study.
Hip fracture patients are fragile, and the majority fail to fully recover to their pre-fracture functional level, resulting in an increase in institutionalization. We aimed to investigate risk factors for being dependent at discharge and for failure to return to independent living 12 months after a hip fracture. ⋯ Mobilizing patients to standing within 24 h from hip fracture surgery was vital in maximizing short-term functional recovery. Failure to return to independent living was seen in the frailest patients. However, the majority remained in their own home with little increase in care needs.

ReviewRisk analysis of periprosthetic knee joint infection (PJI) in total knee arthroplasty after preoperative corticosteroid injection: a systematic review : A study performed by the Early-Osteoarthritis group of ESSKA-European Knee Associates section.
Intra-articular corticosteroid injection is widely used for symptomatic relief of knee osteoarthritis. However, if pain is not improved which consequences a total knee arthroplasty (TKA), there is a potential risk of post-operative periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). The aim of this study is to investigate whether the use of preoperative intra-articular corticosteroid injection increases the risk of PJI and to investigate a time frame in which the risk of subsequent infection is significantly increased. ⋯ IV.

Increased postoperative glycemic variability is associated with increased mortality in diabetic patients undergoing hip arthroplasty for hip fracture.
Increased glycemic variability (GV) during hospitalization has been associated with increased rates of surgical site and periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) following elective total joint arthroplasty. Uncertainty exists surrounding GV as a predictor for complications in urgent arthroplasty cases following hip fractures. In this study, we evaluated the association between GV and postoperative complications in diabetic patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) and hemiarthroplasty (HA) for hip fractures. ⋯ Higher GV in the postoperative period is associated with increased rates of mortality in diabetic patients following THA and HA for hip fractures. Efforts should be made to monitor and control glucose variability in the postoperative period.

Use of a novel imageless navigation system reduced fluoroscopy exposure and improved acetabular positioning in anterior approach total hip arthroplasty: a case-control study.
Direct anterior approach (DAA) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) frequently utilizes fluoroscopy. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of using a novel, imageless THA navigation system on radiation exposure and acetabular cup placement consistency. ⋯ Use of a novel imageless navigation system for DAA THA significantly reduced fluoroscopic radiation exposure and improved consistency in acetabular cup placement.
