A human, allogeneic cortical bone screw for distal interphalangeal joint (DIP) arthrodesis: a retrospective cohort study with at least 10 months follow-up.
The prime requisites of a good digital arthrodesis are a painless and stable union in a proper position. Arthrodesis of the distal interphalangeal joint of the fingers is not without potential complications including nonunion, malunion, and deep tissue infections. The Shark Screw® is a human, cortical bone allograft for osteosynthesis and an alternative to metal or bioabsorbable devices in orthopedics and trauma surgery. The primary hypothesis is that the fusion and complication rate, using the Shark Screw®, is at least similar to those reported in the literature, using metal or bioabsorbable screws. ⋯ IV.

Positive effect of total knee arthroplasty on progression of arteriosclerosis evaluated by cardio-ankle vascular index.
Physical function is expected to improve with an increase in physical activity owing to improvement in knee joint pain after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This study was performed to evaluate the impact of TKA on arteriosclerosis by measuring the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) before and after surgery. ⋯ The lack of significant age-related deterioration over time on both sides suggests that TKA may slow the progression of arteriosclerosis, especially on the operated side. The effect of TKA was found to be greater with a higher CAVI (i.e., more advanced arteriosclerosis).

Revision surgery after failed surgical treatment of midshaft clavicle fractures is often associated with positive detection of bacteria.
Midshaft clavicle fractures are common, and the proportion of patients treated surgically has increased in recent years. With this increase in surgical treatments, the complication rate, for instance of infection, non-union, or implant failure, has also risen. This study evaluates the frequency of pathogen detection during revision surgeries occurring after a prior failed osteosynthesis of midshaft clavicle fractures. ⋯ Revision surgery frequently shows pathogen detection without signs of infection. Cutibacterium acnes is the most common pathogen. Despite pathogen detection, bone healing can be achieved with revision surgery, although the rate of repeat revision surgeries is high.

Risk factor analysis on perioperative greater trochanteric fracture of total hip arthroplasty via anterolateral approach.
A greater trochanteric fracture is a perioperative complication of primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) via an anterolateral approach. Although surgeons determine risk factors in the preoperative planning phase, no study explored the relationship between the planned femoral implant and greater trochanter. This study attempts to determine the risk factors for perioperative greater trochanteric fractures in primary THA via an anterolateral approach. ⋯ This study identified female sex and Type B femoral geometry as risk factors for perioperative greater trochanteric fracture via an anterolateral approach. Our results may reduce the incidence of perioperative greater trochanteric fractures associated with primary THA.

Predictors of and predictive nomogram for cut-out of proximal femur nail anti-rotation device in intertrochanteric fractures.
This study determined independent predictors and developed a predictive nomogram for failed correction of intertrochanteric fractures due to cut-out of the proximal femur nail anti-rotation (PFNA) device. ⋯ A reliable predictive nomogram was developed for cut-out of the PFNA in intertrochanteric fractures, based on BMI, quality of reduction, blade position, and TAD.
