Development of a device to measure adherence and pressure characteristics of positive expiratory pressure therapies used by adults with cystic fibrosis.
Introduction: Positive expiratory pressure (PEP) and oscillating positive expiratory pressure (OscPEP) therapies are often used by people with cystic fibrosis (CF) to facilitate airway clearance. However, suboptimal adherence and poor technique may reduce their effectiveness. Objective: To develop a device (PEPtrac) to accurately measure and provide preliminary clinical data of adherence and technique characteristics when airway clearance is performed using PEP/OscPEP devices. ⋯ For example, expiratory duration with PariPEP S® (mean [SD] = 4.8 [1.2] sec) was longer (p < .001) than Acapella DH® (3.7 [0.8] sec) and Aerobika® (2.9 [1.1] sec) and Aerobika® had a higher oscillation amplitude than Acapella DH® (6.4 [1.7] vs 5.3 [1.5] cmH2O, p < .001). Discussion: Accurate measurement of PEP/OscPEP adherence and technique using a device such as PEPtrac was possible. Further research is required to investigate the clinical importance of the variability in technique seen in our clinical data.

Meta Analysis Comparative StudyLaterality judgment performance between people with chronic pain and pain-free individuals. A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Background: Treatment of chronic pain is challenging and there is often failure of recovery, with the need to look at different approaches in its management. Central mechanisms may contribute to chronicity (i.e. disturbance in body schema). Laterality judgment is dependent on body schema and can determine affected central mechanisms. ⋯ Conclusions: Laterality judgment impairment was shown in CPRS1, upper limb pain, hand and wrist pain, carpal-tunnel syndrome, facial pain, knee osteoarthritis, and leg pain. No conclusions could be drawn in low back pain, due to the low-quality evidence and differing results. There was no impairment in whiplash-associated disorders and nonspecific cervical pain showed conflicting evidence.

Physiotherapy treatment approaches for survivors of critical illness: a proposal from a Delphi study.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop practical recommendations for physiotherapy for survivors of critical illness after hospital discharge. Methods: A modified Delphi consensus study was performed. A scoping literature review formed the basis for three Delphi rounds. ⋯ Physiotherapy treatment goals should be directed toward improvement of aerobic capacity, physical functioning, activities in daily living, muscle strength, respiratory and pulmonary function, fatigue, pain, and health-related quality of life. Physiotherapy measurements and interventions to improve these outcomes are suggested. Conclusion: This study adds to the knowledge on post-ICU physiotherapy with practical recommendations supporting clinical decision-making in the treatment of survivors of critical illness after hospital discharge.

Using the consultation-based reassurance questionnaire to assess reassurance skills among physiotherapy students: reliability and responsiveness.
There is a robust body of evidence suggesting that communication skills during consultations are associated with patient satisfaction and adherence. Training practitioners to improve communication and reassurance delivery is therefore desirable. The Consultation-Based Reassurance Questionnaire (CRQ) for people presenting with back pain has not been tested as a tool to examine the reliability and responsiveness of communication training for practitioners. ⋯ The CRQ Scale shows good reliability and acceptable levels of responsiveness to detect change before and after training in communication skills in physiotherapy students. The scale requires testing in real-life settings to establish better responsiveness.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of elastic band exercise on the frailty states in pre-frail elderly people.
To discuss the effects of elastic band exercise on the frailty states in pre-frail elderly people. ⋯ Elastic band exercise can improve frailty states in pre-frail elderly people, make them broke away from pre-frailty and restore them to non-frailty through improving the grip strength, walking speed and physical activity, and the effects after 8 weeks are better than those after 4 weeks.
