Brazil is a tropical/subtropical geographic area with elevated ultraviolet (UV) radiation. We report very high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in a large database of Brazilian subjects and show seasonal and reciprocal relationship between vitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) over the years in this tropical area.

We compared bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS) in postmenopausal women with a distal radius fracture older than 50 years with controls. Total hip BMD was significantly different, but TBS was not different between two groups, suggesting TBS does not reflect microarchitectural changes of the distal radius.

Hip fractures place a large burden on healthcare and determining the variation in incidence is important to plan resources. We found, in Northern Ireland, that the age-related incidence for women is declining but the incidence for men and the total number of fractures remains static as the elderly population increases.

The effect of single-task and dual-task balance exercise programs on balance performance in adults with osteoporosis: a randomized controlled preliminary trial.
Osteoporosis is a serious disease characterized by muscle weakness in the lower extremities, shortened length of trunk, and increased dorsal kyphosis leading to poor balance performance. Although balance impairment increases in adults with osteoporosis, falls and fall-related injuries have been shown to occur mainly during the dual-task performance. Several studies have shown that dual-task performance was improved with specific repetitive dual-task exercises.

Secular trends in fracture incidence in the UK between 1990 and 2012.
We studied sex-specific incidence rates in a population 50 years or older in the UK. In the period of 1990-2012, the overall rate of fracture did not change, but there were marked secular alterations in the rates of individual fracture types, particularly hip and spine fractures in the elderly.
