The objective of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of trabecular bone score (TBS) and bone mineral density (BMD) for identifying vertebral fractures (VFx) in well-compensated type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients. TBS and femoral neck BMD below certain cutoffs may be useful for identifying VFx in well-compensated T2D patients. ⋯ TBS and FN-BMD below certain cutoffs may be useful for identifying VFx in well-compensated T2D patients.

Zoledronic acid in children with osteogenesis imperfecta and Bruck syndrome: a 2-year prospective observational study.
Treatment with zoledronic acid (ZA) over 2 years, among 33 children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and five Bruck syndrome cases, showed reduction in fracture rates, pain, and improvement in bone mineral density (BMD) and motor milestones of development. This is the first study reporting the use of bisphosphonates in patients with Bruck syndrome (BS). ⋯ Zoledronic acid proved to be safe and effective in the treatment of OI and BS. The biannual infusion protocol was convenient to patients. There was a positive correlation between disease severity and benefits of the treatment. The use of the CSS proved to be of value in the assessment of the degree of severity in OI, and with some modifications, it was a valuable tool for the assessment of response to treatment.

Further reductions in nonvertebral fracture rate with long-term denosumab treatment in the FREEDOM open-label extension and influence of hip bone mineral density after 3 years.
Limited data exist on the efficacy of long-term therapies for osteoporosis. In osteoporotic postmenopausal women receiving denosumab for 7 years, nonvertebral fracture rates significantly decreased in years 4-7 versus years 1-3. This is the first demonstration of a further benefit on fracture outcomes with long-term therapy for osteoporosis. ⋯ Denosumab treatment beyond 3 years was associated with a further reduction in nonvertebral fracture rate that persisted through 7 years of continuous denosumab administration. The degree to which denosumab further reduces nonvertebral fracture risk appears influenced by the hip bone density achieved with initial therapy.

We investigated the effect of calcitonin (CT) on lumbar intervertebral disk degeneration (LIDD) in rats with ovariectomy-induced osteopenia. CT protected ovariectomized rats from LIDD by, at least in part, modifying extracellular matrix metabolism of the disks and preserving the microarchitecture and biomechanical properties of adjacent vertebrae. ⋯ Our data demonstrate that CT-treated OVX rats display less intervertebral disk degeneration and favorable changes in intervertebral disk metabolism, associated with higher trabecular bone mass, better trabecular microarchitecture, and better biomechanical strength when compared to vehicle-treated OVX rats.

Multicenter Study
A survey of outcomes and management of patients post fragility fractures in China.
We found that the fragility hip and vertebral fractures caused excess mortality rates in this Chinese female population, which was unexpectedly lower than those in western countries and other Asian countries. This was the first nationwide survey relating to post-fracture outcomes conducted among Chinese population in Mainland China. ⋯ The osteoporotic hip and vertebral fractures caused excess mortality rates in this population of Mainland China. The current diagnosis and medical treatment following the fragility fractures is still insufficient in Mainland China.
