The purpose of the study was to estimate the cost-effectiveness of balloon kyphoplasty compared to nonsurgical management and vertebroplasty for the treatment of hospitalised osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures in the UK. A cost-effectiveness model was constructed and used for analysis. Balloon kyphoplasty may be cost-effective compared to relevant alternatives. ⋯ BKP may be a cost-effective strategy for the treatment of patients hospitalised with acute OVCF in the UK compared to NSM and PVP. Additional RCT data on the benefits of BKP and PVP compared to simulated sham surgery and further data on the mortality benefits with BKP compared to NSM and PVP would reduce uncertainty.

An association between atypical fractures and general cortical thickness of the femoral shaft is often suggested in the literature. Our radiographic measurements of 59 atypical and 218 ordinary fractures now exclude a difference larger than 10 % in mean femoral cortical thickness (sum of lateral and medial) with 95 % confidence. ⋯ The concept of a generally increased cortical thickness in patients with atypical fractures should be reconsidered.

The risk of non-vertebral osteoporotic fractures increased by increasing recalled amount of weight loss when dieting in women aged ≥ 46 years and in those with BMI < 25 kg/m(2) participating in the Tromsø Study (1994/1995-2009). The increased risk was present both in women with few and several episodes of recalled dieting. ⋯ The increased risk of non-vertebral osteoporotic fractures by recalled dieting in women indicates that maintenance of a stable weight may have beneficial effects on fracture risk.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-osteoporotic effects of Radix Dipsaci total saponins (RTS). We showed that RTS was able to improve bone properties by either an increase of osteoblastic activity or a decrease in osteoclastic activity. ⋯ RTS treatment can effectively suppress the loss of bone mass induced by OVX and in vitro evidence suggests this could be through actions on both osteoblasts and osteoclasts.

Skeletal and hormonal responses to vitamin D supplementation during sunlight deprivation in Antarctic expeditioners.
Sunlight deprivation results in vitamin D deficiency but serum vitamin D levels can be maintained above 50 nmol/L when supplemented with 50,000 IU at least every alternate month. ⋯ During sunlight deprivation of up to 12 months, serum 25(OH)D levels can be maintained above 50 nmol/L when expeditioners are provided with 50,000 I U at least every alternate month.
