Comparative StudyMaternal mortality after cesarean section in The Netherlands.
To assess cesarean section-related maternal mortality in The Netherlands during 1983-1992. ⋯ Although cesarean section is a relatively safe procedure nowadays, birth by cesarean section in The Netherlands is seven times more hazardous than vaginal birth. Keeping the cesarean birth rate as low as possible is therefore in the interest of women of reproductive age.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEffective obstetric paracervical block with reduced dose of bupivacaine. A prospective randomized double-blind study comparing 25 mg (0.25%) and 12.5 mg (0.125%) of bupivacaine.
To study whether paracervical block (PCB) with 12.5 mg (0.125%) of bupivacaine is as effective as with 25 mg (0.25%) and if there are differences in fetal heart rate (FHR) patterns between the doses. ⋯ Paracervical block with 12.5 mg of bupivacaine is an effective method to relieve pain during labor. Fetal heart rate changes seemed to appear less frequently with this reduced dose. It seems that by lowering the dose of bupivacaine it is possible to reduce fetal side-effects without losing analgesic effect.

Relaxin is not related to symptom-giving pelvic girdle relaxation in pregnant women.
The pregnancy associated hormone relaxin induces loosening of the pelvic ligaments in several species. This study was undertaken to evaluate whether pregnant women with symptom-giving girdle relaxation had increased serum relaxin concentrations during pregnancy. ⋯ The present results do not suggest an important role for relaxin in symptom-giving pelvic girdle relaxation during human pregnancy.

Comparative StudyEffects of estradiol and interaction with progesterone or oxytocin on term human myometrial contractile activity.
To investigate the effects of estradiol (E2) alone and in combination with progesterone or oxytocin on contractile activity of term human myometrium in vitro. ⋯ These data suggest that E2 had both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on term human myometrial contractility and that E2 altered the myometrial response to progesterone and oxytocin mainly by decreasing tonus.

Comparative StudyChronological changes in subjective symptoms during pregnancy in nulliparous and multiparous women.
To investigate chronological changes of subjective symptoms during a normal pregnancy in nulliparous and multiparous women. ⋯ The multiparous group had more complaints than did the nulliparous subjects. These normal patterns are of practical clinical use concerning subjective symptoms of pregnancy.
