Experimental antegrade enema. Effects on water, electrolyte and acid-base balances with different solutions.
To study the effects on the water, electrolyte, and acid-base balances in rabbits submitted to antegrade enema with different solutions through appendicostomy. ⋯ All solutions used in this study caused minor alterations on water, electrolyte or acid-base balances. The most intense ones were caused by hypertonic sodium phosphate solution (SPS) and isotonic saline solution (ISS) and the least by polyethyleneglycol electrolyte solution (PEG) and glycerin solution 12% (GS).

The effects of intrathecal administration of betamethasone over the dogs' spinal cord and meninges.
To determinate the potential clinical and histological changes due the injection of betamethasone, when administered into the canine intrathecal space. ⋯ Intrathecal administration of betamethasone caused histological changes in the spinal cord and meninges in some of the dogs involved in this study.

Ketone bodies metabolism during ischemic and reperfusion brain injuries following bilateral occlusion of common carotid arteries in rats.
To evaluate the in vivo alterations on ketone bodies metabolism after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion through an experimental model of brain ischemia induced by simple occlusion of common carotid arteries (CCAs) in Wistar rats. ⋯ The partial transient acute global brain ischemia induced by the bilateral carotid occlusion in Wistar rats triggered ketogenesis probably due to a central stimulation of catecholamine secretion. There was an increased cerebral uptake of ketone bodies following brain ischemia, reaffirming these metabolites as alternative energy substrates under conditions of cerebral metabolic stress as well as its potential role on neuroprotection. The greatest changes in ketone bodies metabolism were verified at initial minutes of recirculation as a result of the reperfusion injury phenomenon.

Microsurgical techniques have been applied in many surgical specialties and have also a broad application in surgical research. It demands high technical skills and continued training. ⋯ Here, we propose a model of a training course in microsurgery. We also suggest that surgical societies involved with microsurgery promote training courses on a regular basis.
