Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) may reduce the absorption of iron, but the extent to which this absorption is impeded is largely unknown. First, we determined the prevalence of iron deficiency following RYGB and explored the risk factors for its development. Second, we examined to what extent oral iron supplements are absorbed after RYGB. ⋯ Iron deficiency is extremely frequent after RYGB and is linked with different risk factors. Iron supplementation seems essential, but the effect of oral tablets may be limited as absorption of oral iron supplements is insufficient post-RYGB.

Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) has been proposed as a promising therapeutic option in treating obesity for 20 years. Currently, the available device of GES cannot meet the clinical needs. The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of a new type of adjustable gastric electrical stimulator in reducing food intake and body weight. ⋯ Food intake and body weight of dogs are significantly reduced by adjustable GES. Individual parameters and resistance during GES are required to be considered. The new adjustable device may have good prospects of clinical application for obesity.

The purpose of this study are to review available smartphone applications ('apps') relating to weight loss surgery, and assess the level of medical professional involvement in their design ⋯ This study has identified that the majority of available apps relating to weight loss surgery do not have health professional input. The establishment of a 'quality stamp' provided by an established bariatric surgical body could improve the confidence with which patients and clinicians use these new information sources. Weight loss surgery apps offer a unique opportunity to provide accurate and reliable patient information and their use as part of the informed consent process should be explored.
