Accuracy of sonographically estimated fetal weight in 840 women with different pregnancy complications prior to induction of labor.
To evaluate the accuracy of sonographically estimated fetal weight (EFW) shortly before induction of labor in the presence of different pregnancy complications, and to define possible variables affecting it. ⋯ The sonographic EFW is highly correlated with birth weight. However, clinicians should be aware of the risk of overestimation in pregnancies with suspected LGA and underestimation in pregnancies with PPROM and suspected FGR.

Qualitative venous Doppler waveform analysis improves prediction of critical perinatal outcomes in premature growth-restricted fetuses.
Our aim was to test the hypothesis that qualitative ductus venosus and umbilical venous Doppler analysis improves prediction of critical perinatal outcomes in preterm growth-restricted fetuses with abnormal placental function. ⋯ Prediction of critical perinatal outcomes is improved when venous and umbilical artery qualitative waveform analysis is combined. The incorporation of venous Doppler into fetal surveillance is therefore strongly suggested for all preterm IUGR fetuses.

Prenatal detection of velamentous insertion of the umbilical cord: a prospective color Doppler ultrasound study.
Velamentous insertion of the umbilical cord, with a reported incidence of 1% in singleton pregnancies, has been associated with several obstetric complications including fetal growth restriction, prematurity, congenital anomalies, low Apgar scores, fetal bleeding and retained placenta. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of identifying velamentous insertion of the umbilical cord during routine obstetric ultrasound. ⋯ Velamentous insertion of the umbilical cord can reliably be detected prenatally by gray-scale and color Doppler ultrasound. 3D imaging had limited value in the evaluation of the placental cord insertion site in our subset of patients. Systematic assessment of the placental cord insertion site at routine obstetric ultrasound has the potential of identifying pregnancies with velamentous insertion and, therefore, those at risk for obstetric complications including vasa previa.

Wolman disease is a rare autosomal-recessive disorder caused by reduced levels of lysosomal acid lipase. It occurs in infancy and is fatal in most cases before the age of 1 year. ⋯ After delivery, the diagnosis of Wolman disease was established. Although rare, storage diseases such as Wolman disease should be considered in cases of isolated fetal ascites.

The contribution of transvaginal ultrasound in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis: an observational study.
To assess the contribution of transvaginal and transabdominal sonography in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. ⋯ The use of TVS in conjunction with TAS seems to improve the detection rate of acute appendicitis.
