Review[Echocardiography as a Diagnostic Tool in Emergencies and Hemodynamic Instability].
Echocardiography is an imaging method in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine which adds a new dimension to hemodynamic monitoring: the direct visualization of the cardiac function and its disruptions. The review article shows the advantages and limitations of recent transthoracic (TTE) and transesophageal (TEE) echocardiography in the diagnostic course of hemodynamic instability. For TTE and TEE focused examination techniques and sequences are illustrated with regards to their fast applicability to hemodynamic monitoring.

Review[Echocardiographic Assessment of Perioperative Right and Left Ventricular Function].
The perioperative quantification of left and right ventricular function is cornerstone to provide optimal patient care. Echocardiography has emerged as the most important cardiac imaging modality in this setting, mainly due to its rapid availability, non-invasiveness and cost-efficiency. ⋯ Hence, a profound understanding of these measurements is key to delineate sufficient from failing left or right ventricular function and guide treatment decisions. This article gives the reader an overview over the most important measurements, reference values and pitfalls.
