Safety of Noncardiac Surgery in Patients With Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy at a Tertiary Care Center.
This study's purpose was to review non-cardiac surgery (NCS) in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) to examine perioperative management and quantify postoperative mortality and worsening heart failure. ⋯ HOCM patients safely can undergo NCS at multidisciplinary centers experienced in caring for these patients. The mortality rate in this study was less than that reported in the majority of other studies. Postoperative complications, including increasing heart failure, may occur, especially in patients with more severe preoperative cardiac symptoms.

Risk Factors and Impact on Clinical Outcome of Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter Baumannii Acquisition in Cardiac Surgery Patients.
Acinetobacter baumannii recently has emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen. The aim of this study was to assess the impact on mortality of multidrug-resistant A. baumannii (MDR-AB) infection/colonization in patients undergoing cardiac surgery and to investigate microbiologic characteristics, epidemiologic spread of this pathogen, and the relative containment measures. ⋯ Sicker patients are more susceptible to be infected by A. baumannii, but mortality is not significantly higher compared with other patients with similar characteristics. Adequate measures are fundamental to control the spread of the infection.

Accuracy of Vasopressor Documentation in Anesthesia Records.
To determine the accuracy of documentation of vasoactive medication administration in anesthetic records. ⋯ The authors found complete or partial omission of documentation of bolus doses of vasopressors in anesthesia records in the majority of cases in which such drugs were given. This finding has the potential to jeopardize the data integrity of local and pooled case registries and conclusions of retrospective studies that utilize these data.

High Left Ventricular Filling Pressure on Doppler Echocardiography Is Associated with Graft Failure and Overall Mortality Following Kidney Transplantation.
Although E/e´ is prognostic of mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESED), little is known about the prognostic implications of E/e´ following kidney transplant (KT). The objective of this study was to evaluate whether an elevated E/e´ is associated with graft function, postoperative hemodialysis, and overall mortality in end-stage renal disease patients following KT. ⋯ Preoperative E/e´ is a prognostic indicator of overall mortality in ESRD patients undergoing KT.
