ReviewThree-Dimensional Printing and Transesophageal Echocardiographic Imaging of Patient-Specific Mitral Valve Models in a Pulsatile Phantom Model.
Three-dimensional printing is increasingly used in the health care industry. Making patient-specific anatomic task trainers has been one of the more commonly described uses of this technique specifically, allowing surgeons to perform complex procedures on patient-specific models in a nonoperative setting. ⋯ Herein a customized pulsatile left-sided heart model that uses patient-specific 3-dimensional printed valves under physiological intracardiac pressures as a TEE task trainer is described. With this model, dynamic patient-specific valvular anatomy can be visualized with actual TEE machines by trainees to familiarize themselves with the surgery equipment and the imaging protocol.

Historical ArticleThe "Ice Age" in Cardiac Surgery: Evolution of the "Siberian" Method of Brain Protection During Deep Hypothermic Perfusionless Circulatory Arrest.
Deep hypothermic perfusionless circulatory arrest was the first practical neuroprotective technique used for open-heart surgery. It was refined at the Novosibirsk Medical Research Center in Siberia and was actively used from the mid-1950s until 2001. This review describes the development of this technique and its contribution to our understanding of the dynamic changes in human physiology during induced hypothermia for circulatory arrest without extracorporeal perfusion. Deep hypothermic perfusionless circulatory arrest was an important stepping stone in the development of modern approaches in neuroprotection and monitoring during cardiac surgery.

Singapore is a small Southeast Asian island city-state located at the tip of the Malay peninsula with a population of 5.61 million people. It was a former British colony that went on to become a part of Malaysia before gaining independence in 1965. Since then, Singapore has developed tremendously from a small fishing village into the region's medical hub. This article will explore the roots of cardiac anesthesia in Singapore and how it has developed into a subspecialty today.

Perioperative Factors Associated With Changes in Troponin T During Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.
Investigate important clinical and operative variables associated with increases in cardiac troponin T (cTnT) as indicators of myocardial injury after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). ⋯ Left ventricular ejection fraction, New York Heart Association classification, kidney function, inflammation status, duration of cardiopulmonary bypass, body surface area, and preoperative MI were associated with the cTnT rise-and-fall pattern related to myocardial injury after CABG. Information regarding these variables may be valuable when using cTnT in the diagnostic workup of postoperative MI.
