Comparative StudyEarly and Midterm Clinical Outcomes of Transcatheter Valve-in-Valve Implantation Versus Redo Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement for Aortic Bioprosthetic Valve Degeneration: Two Faces of the Same Medal.
To compare early and midterm outcomes of transcatheter valve-in-valve implantation (ViV-TAVI) and redo surgical aortic valve replacement (re-SAVR) for aortic bioprosthetic valve degeneration. ⋯ ViV-TAVI is a safe, feasible, and reliable procedure.

Observational StudyPerioperative Emergencies: Who, What, When, Where, Why?
Throughout the last several decades, the perioperative mortality rate from anesthesia care has declined, shifting focus to perioperative emergencies. Data on these emergencies, often referred to as "Anesthesia STAT" calls (STATs), are lacking at adult hospitals. The goal of this study was to determine the etiology of STATs at a major academic medical center and to determine surgical cases and patient comorbid conditions that increase the risk for STATs. ⋯ Cardiac arrest is the most common etiology of STATs. Specific surgical services and comorbid conditions are associated with an increased risk of STATs.

Changes in Plasma Angiopoietin Levels After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement and Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement: A Prospective Cohort Study.
Angiopoietins (Angs) regulate endothelial permeability. Ang-1 and 2 (Ang-1 and Ang-2) are implied in endothelial stability through an antagonism effect. The objectives of the present study were to describe and compare changes in Ang levels after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). ⋯ SAVR induces greater alterations of Ang homeostasis than TAVR, confirming a role for the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. Paravalvular leakage after TAVR is associated with Ang changes similar to those observed with SAVR.

A Descriptive Study of Perioperative Hemodynamics in Open Cardiac Surgery Patients.
The purpose of the present study was to describe how the perioperative hemodynamic profile before and after cardiopulmonary bypass during cardiac surgery is influenced by age and to describe the association between postoperative hemodynamics and one-year mortality. ⋯ This is a large registry based study describing the perioperative hemodynamic profile of patients undergoing cardiac surgery and the results enhance our understanding of age-differentiated values of CI and SvO2 in this specific population.

Validation of Claims Data for the Identification of Intraoperative Transesophageal Echocardiography During Cardiac Surgery.
The goal of this study was to assess the validity of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) claims data for the identification of intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) during cardiac surgery. ⋯ Billing claims using CPT code(s) identified true intraoperative TEE with a high sensitivity, specificity, excellent positive predictive value, and moderate negative predictive value. These results demonstrated that claims data are a valuable data source from which to study the effect of TEE in cardiac surgical patients.
