CommentThe Year in Coagulation: Selected Highlights from 2020.
This is the second annual review in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia to cover highlights in coagulation for cardiac surgery. The goal of this article is to provide readers with a focused summary from the literature of the prior year's most important coagulation topics. In 2020, this included a discussion covering allogeneic transfusion, antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy, factor concentrates, coagulation testing, mechanical circulatory support, and the effects of coronavirus disease 2019.

Preoperative Anemia as a Risk Factor for Postoperative Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Lung Transplantation.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of preoperative anemia on early postoperative outcomes in a population of patients undergoing lung transplantation. ⋯ Preoperative anemia in patients undergoing lung transplantation is undertreated and independently associated with an increased risk for redo surgery for bleeding. Additional studies regarding reasons for this association and effect of treatment are necessary to improve outcomes.

Decrease of Coronal Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter is Associated With Postoperative Cognitive Decline in Patients Undergoing Carotid Endarterectomy.
Patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) have a significant possibility of developing postoperative cognitive decline (POCD). POCD after surgery could be result from cerebral hypotension induced by cross-clamping or postoperative hyperperfusion. Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) exhibits an excellent correlation with invasive intracranial pressure monitoring, Here, the authors explored the risk factors of POCD in patients undergoing CEA, paying close attention to ONSD to test the hypothesis that decrease of coronal ONSD was related to the incidence of POCD. ⋯ Decrease of coronal ONSD, measured by ultrasonography and TIVA, were associated with POCD. Change in coronal ONSD was a moderate predictor of incidence of POCD.

Association Between Intercostal Nerve Block and Postoperative Glycemic Control in Patients With Diabetes Undergoing Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Pulmonary Resection: A Retrospective Study.
The present study was performed to investigate the possible association between intercostal nerve block (INB) and postoperative glycemic control in patients with diabetes undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic pulmonary resection. ⋯ INB, performed before closure of surgical incisions, was associated with improved glycemic control in patients with diabetes within 48 hours after video-assisted thoracoscopic pulmonary resection.

Effect of Perioperative Subglottic Secretion Drainage on Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia After Cardiac Surgery: A Retrospective, Before-and-After Study.
Although postoperative subglottic secretion drainage prevents ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) after cardiac surgery, its role during the perioperative period is unclear. For the present study, the effect of subglottic secretion drainage during and after cardiac surgery on postoperative VAP was investigated. ⋯ Routine perioperative subglottic secretion drainage using subglottic suctioning endotracheal tubes in patients undergoing cardiac surgery was associated with a reduction in the risk of VAP after surgery.
