Gender of Abstract Presenters at the Annual Meetings of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and American Society of Anesthesiologists: 2016 to 2020.
The purpose of this study was to assess gender in abstract poster presentations at the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Annual Meetings from 2016 through 2020 to determine possible gender disparities in anesthesia overall as compared to cardiothoracic anesthesia. ⋯ At the SCA, women were appropriately represented as both presenting and senior abstract authors. At the ASA, there was significant overrepresentation of women as presenting authors and underrepresentation of women as senior authors. These results suggested that abstract presentation is not a barrier to academic advancement.

Observational StudyOne-Year Outcome After Cardiac Surgery for Patients With Cancer: An Observational Monocentric Retrospective Study.
Cardiac surgery increasingly is being performed in patients with a history of or with active cancer. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between a history of cancer and 1-year mortality after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). ⋯ In a large cohort of patients undergoing cardiac surgery with CPB, cancer was not independently associated with 1-year mortality. An isolated cancer history should not lead to denial of cardiac surgery. The impact of cancer on complications and long-term survival after cardiac surgery requires further research.

Observational StudyAccuracy, Precision, and Trending Ability of Perioperative Central Venous Oxygen Saturation Compared to Mixed Venous Oxygen Saturation in Unselected Cardiac Surgical Patients.
To determine whether central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) measurements could be used interchangeably with mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) measurements in adult cardiac surgery patients. ⋯ ScvO2 values showed acceptable accuracy as the mean bias was low. The precision was inadequate; although the PE was acceptable, the LOA were wide. Trending ability was inadequate. The authors cannot recommend the use of ScvO2 values interchangeably with SvO2 measurements in the management of adult cardiac surgery patients.

The Optimal Cell Salvage Settings to Maximize Hematocrit and Minimize Potassium Using the Cobe BRAT2 Autologous Blood Recovery Unit.
The objective was to determine the optimal cell saver device settings (infusion rate and wash rate) at which hematocrit is preserved and potassium and lactate are removed from banked red blood cells (RBC). ⋯ Red-cell washing produces higher hematocrit and lower potassium as infusion rate and wash rate decrease. A 340-mL unit of RBC can be processed in 4.26 minutes without loss of hematocrit or an increase in potassium when both infusion and wash rates are set to 400 mL/min.

Persistent Right Ventricle Dilatation in SARS-CoV-2-Related Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support.
Venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support may be considered in experienced centers for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection refractory to conventional treatment. In ECMO patients, echocardiography has emerged as a clinical tool for implantation and clinical management; but to date, little data are available on COVID-related ARDS patients requiring ECMO. The authors assessed the incidence of right ventricular dilatation and dysfunction (RvDys) in patients with COVID-related ARDS requiring ECMO. ⋯ According to the authors' data, in COVID-related ARDS requiring ECMO support, RvDys is common, associated with increased ICU mortality. Overall, the data underscored the clinical role of echocardiography in COVID-related ARDS supported by venovenous ECMO, because serial echocardiographic assessments (especially focused on RV changes) are able to reflect pulmonary COVID disease severity.
