Our aim was to investigate the diagnostic value of unenhanced MDCT in anemic patients. Fifty consecutive patients with proven anemia and 50 nonanemic matched group for age, sex and body mass index were evaluated. In either group, hemoglobin levels were assessed no more than 24 h from an unenhanced CT of the thorax. ⋯ However, the best trade-off between sensitivity (80%) and specificity (100%) was obtained from combining both subjective and objective analysis. Interpreting anemia upon unnenhanced MDCT of the thorax is quite feasible. A diagnostic approach that considers both subjective and objective analysis offers the best trade-off between sensitivity and specificity.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) provides functional information and can be used for the detection and characterization of pathologic processes, including malignant tumors. The recently introduced concept of "diffusion-weighted whole-body imaging with background body signal suppression" (DWIBS) now allows acquisition of volumetric diffusion-weighted images of the entire body. This new concept has unique features different from conventional DWI and may play an important role in whole-body oncological imaging. This review describes and illustrates the basics of DWI, the features of DWIBS, and its potential applications in oncology.

To investigate the role of MR imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of peripheral nerve lesions of the upper extremities and to assess its impact on the patient management. Fifty-one patients with clinical evidence of radial, median, and/or ulnar nerve lesions and unclear or ambiguous clinical findings had MRI of the upper extremity at 1.5 T. MR images and clinical data were reviewed by two blinded radiologists and a group of three clinical experts, respectively, with regard to radial, median, and/or ulnar nerve, as well as muscle abnormalities. ⋯ The correlation of MRI and clinical findings was moderate for the assessment of the median/radial nerve and muscles (p = 0.51/0.51/0.63, respectively) and weak for the ulnar nerve (p = 0.40). The impact of MRI on patient management was assessed as "major" in 24/51 (47%), "moderate" in 19/51 (37%), and "no" in 8/51 (16%) patients. MRI in patients with upper extremity peripheral neuropathies and unclear or ambiguous clinical findings substantially influences the patient management.

To investigate the influence of age, sex and spinal level on perfusion parameters of normal lumbar bone marrow with dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE MRI). Sixty-seven subjects referred for evaluation of low back pain or sciatica underwent DCE MRI of the lumbar spine. After subtraction of dynamic images, a region of interest (ROI) was placed on each lumbar vertebral body of all subjects, and time intensity curves were generated. ⋯ All perfusion parameters, except for washout (WOUT), showed a mild linear correlation with age. Time to maximum slope (TMSP) and time to peak (TTPK) showed the same correlation with sex (0.22
