The learning curve of robotic-arm assisted acetabular cup positioning during total hip arthroplasty.
Robotic-arm assisted surgery aims to reduce manual errors and improve the accuracy of implant positioning and orientation during total hip arthroplasty (THA). The objective of this study was to assess the surgical team's learning curve for robotic-arm assisted acetabular cup positioning during THA. ⋯ Integration of robotic-arm assisted acetabular cup positioning during THA was associated with a learning curve of 12 cases for operative times and surgical team confidence levels but there was no learning curve effect for accuracy in restoring native hip biomechanics or achieving planned acetabular cup positioning and orientation.

Stem subsidence and thigh pain can cause significant patient dissatisfaction after cementless THA. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of proximal-femoral morphology and stem alignment on clinical outcomes using a double-tapered, cementless titanium femoral component. ⋯ Subsidence and proximal-femoral morphology are potential sources of postoperative morbidity in certain cementless THA patients. In accordance with prior studies, CFI was identified as a potential risk factor for intraoperative calcar fractures. More research into preoperative femoral morphologies, such as GT overhang and FNS, is warranted as these may contribute to unsatisfactory results related to cementless THA.

Postoperative blood product transfusions in elderly hip fracture patients cause concern for morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to identify predictors and short-term sequelae of postoperative transfusion following geriatric hip fracture surgery. ⋯ Postoperative transfusion is a common occurrence in geriatric fragility hip fractures with multiple risk factors. Careful preoperative planning and multidisciplinary management efforts are warranted to reduce use of postoperative transfusions.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common orthopaedic procedure and is expected to increase with an increasing elderly population. Many of these patients suffer from chronic diseases which might be associated with anaemia. Anaemia, by itself, increases the risk of morbidity. We aimed to delineate relationship between preoperative anaemia and postoperative composite morbidities in patients undergoing primary THA. ⋯ Moderate-to-severe anaemia increases the risk for composite morbidities, but not mortality in patients undergoing primary THA. Further studies are needed to assess whether preoperative management of moderate-to-severe anaemia would improve outcomes in patients undergoing THA.

The management of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) of the hip is a challenging procedure. One-stage exchange is carried out in specialist centres with comparable infection free survival rates. However, there is a paucity of long-term results of this approach in young patients. ⋯ Single-stage revision surgery for the management of PJI in patients ⩽45 years is a successful treatment option with high infection control, even after long-term follow-up.
