Adherence to the WCRF/AICR guidelines for cancer prevention is associated with lower mortality among older female cancer survivors.
The 2007 World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) guidelines encourage cancer survivors to follow its cancer prevention recommendations. We evaluated whether adherence to the WCRF/AICR guidelines for cancer prevention was associated with lower mortality among older female cancer survivors. ⋯ Older cancer survivors may decrease their risk of death by leading a healthy lifestyle after a cancer diagnosis.

Cancer survivors in the United States: prevalence across the survivorship trajectory and implications for care.
Cancer survivors represent a growing population, heterogeneous in their need for medical care, psychosocial support, and practical assistance. To inform survivorship research and practice, this manuscript will describe the prevalent population of cancer survivors in terms of overall numbers and prevalence by cancer site and time since diagnosis. ⋯ Prevalence estimates for cancer survivors across the survivorship trajectory will inform the national research agenda as well as future projections about the health service needs of this population.

Time to first cigarette and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) levels in adult smokers; National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2007-2010.
The time to first cigarette (TTFC) is a good indicator of several dimensions of nicotine dependence. An early TTFC is also associated with increased lung and oral cancer risk. Our objective was to determine the relationship between TTFC and exposure to tobacco smoke carcinogens. ⋯ Our study provides further evidence that highlights the relationship between TTFC, nicotine dependence, and cancer risk.

Comparative StudyGenetic susceptibility loci for subtypes of breast cancer in an African American population.
Most genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been carried out in European ancestry populations; no risk variants for breast cancer have been identified solely from African ancestry GWAS data. Few GWAS hits have replicated in African ancestry populations. ⋯ The findings illustrate the importance of genetic factors in the disproportionately high occurrence of TNBC in African American women.

Postdiagnosis alcohol consumption and breast cancer prognosis in the after breast cancer pooling project.
Alcohol consumption is an established risk factor for incident breast cancer. However, its role in breast cancer prognosis remains unclear. ⋯ The association between alcohol intake and recurrence may depend on menopausal status at breast cancer diagnosis.
