Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyShort-term infection in cuffed versus noncuffed small bore central catheters: a randomized trial.
To determine if a polyester cuff offered benefit in jugular small-bore central catheters (SBCCs). ⋯ A polyester cuff on a SBCC confers no significant benefit in short-term colonization rates. Infection in SBCCs is uncommon. Despite their small diameters, SBCCs can result in jugular thrombosis, an important consideration in any patient requiring long-term venous access.

Large-bore tunneled central venous catheter insertion in patients with coagulopathy.
To evaluate the safety of tunneled central venous catheter (TCVC) insertion in patients with an International Normalized Ratio (INR) of greater than or equal to 1.5 or a platelet count lower than 50,000/dL. ⋯ Placement of TCVCs in patients with a platelet count between 25,000/dL and 50,000/dL and/or an INR between 1.5 and 2 is safe even without coagulation product transfusions.
