This paper explores the challenges posed by sex and gender for epidemiologists as they try to integrate sex and gender concerns into their work in more appropriate and effective ways. The first challenge is one of conceptual clarification with considerable confusion still surrounding the use of the terms sex and gender themselves. The second challenge is to develop a broader understanding of the links between biological sex and health. ⋯ The fourth challenge is to ensure that all research designs are both sex and gender sensitive. And the final challenge is to find a strategy for integrating findings on both sex and gender into wider equality agendas. This paper will examine each of these challenges in turn.

Clinical Trial[Domestic violence against women: health consequences and need for care--results of a survey among first-aid-patients in the framework of the S.I.G.N.A.L.- accompanying research].
To determine the prevalence of domestic violence (DV), sequelae, and the expectancies of support/intervention among female patients receiving medical care within an emergency department (ED), a pertinent inquiry was effected. ⋯ The sequelae resulting from DV victimisation of women receiving medical services, suggests the need for intervention(s) within the health care setting. Health professionals must first acknowledge DV as a possible cause of injuries and other health disorders in female patients. Domestic violence screening of female patients within the health care setting can enhance the quality of care for victims. Women's expectations show the acceptability of such interventions.
