Many risk factors for postoperative pneumonia have been identified, but those for the progression from atelectasis to pneumonia have been poorly examined. We undertook the present study to find risk factors for the progression from atelectasis to pneumonia. ⋯ This study shows that a substantial number of cases of postoperative pneumonia can be prevented.

Academic surgeons make various important decisions about their careers; however, little is known about the relationships between fellowship training, career development issues, and academic responsibilities. ⋯ There is a relationship between career development issues, fellowship training, and type of fellowship training. Attention to these issues may be important in recruiting and retaining academic surgeons.
