A systematic review of qualitative studies: patients' experiences of preoperative communication.
This article reports on a systematic review of qualitative studies on patients' experiences of preoperative communication with healthcare professionals. ⋯ Patients' sensitivity and their different needs for communication may contribute to future advances in the training of healthcare professionals with regard to their communication knowledge and skills. They may also affect the allocation of resources for patients waiting for surgery and educating related professionals about their knowledge and skills of communication and their attitudes. Adequate space for meeting simultaneously with patients and their relatives and extra human resources and tools for the assessment of individuals' need for communication are also required.

Second-level hospital health professionals' attitudes to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parents seeking health for their children.
The aim of the study was to assess health professionals' knowledge, attitudes and beliefs regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parents accessing health care for their children. ⋯ Properly implemented family-centred care is an ideal model to provide care for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families. However, the benefits of family-centred care can only be realised fully if health professionals delivering that care are sensitive to the context, functions and constructs of all the families they encounter.

Effect of sleep-inducing music on sleep in persons with percutaneous transluminal coronary angiography in the cardiac care unit.
The study compared the effect of earplug-delivered sleep-inducing music on sleep in persons with percutaneous transluminal coronary angiography in the cardiac care unit. ⋯ Nurses working at cardiac care unit can use music to improve sleeping in clients with percutaneous transluminal coronary angiography.

To enhance understanding of the experience of parents in managing their children's postoperative pain in Singapore. ⋯ Nurses need to provide parents with support and education to facilitate their roles and improve their child's postoperative pain management.

Investigation into the use of complementary and alternative medicine and affecting factors in Turkish asthmatic patients.
The purpose of this study was to examine the frequency of complementary and alternative medicine usage in asthmatic patients living in the west of Turkey, the most frequently used complementary and alternative medicine methods and socio-demographic factors affecting this and factors related to the disease. ⋯ Understanding by nurses of the causes and patterns of the use of complementary and alternative medicine in asthmatic patients helps them in directing patient care and patient safety. Nurses should conduct comprehensive diagnostics in the light of complementary and alternative medicine use, and they should be aware of the potential risks.
