The effects of cryotherapy in relieving postarthroscopy pain.
The aim of this study was to examine whether the application of cryotherapy with ice in a plastic bag is effective in reducing the severity of wound pain after arthroscopy. ⋯ Cryotherapy with ice in a plastic bag is a simple, readily attainable and cost-effective technique for relieving postarthroscopy pain. We recommend that it be included in standard treatment protocols. Techniques for cryotherapy should be incorporated into in-service education.

Effects of music on depression in older people: a randomised controlled trial.
To determine the effect of music on depression levels in older adults. Background. Depression is a common psychiatric disorder in older adults, and its impacts on this group of people, along with its conventional treatment, merit our attention. Conventional pharmacological methods might result in dependence and impairment in psychomotor and cognitive functioning. Listening to music, which is a non-pharmacological method, might reduce depression. ⋯ Music is a non-invasive, simple and inexpensive therapeutic method of improving life quality in community-dwelling older people.

Effects of music intervention with nursing presence and recorded music on psycho-physiological indices of cancer patient caregivers.
To compare the effects of music intervention with nursing presence and recorded music on blood volume pulse amplitude, the low/high frequency ratio component of heart rate variability, depression, anxiety and sleep quality in cancer patient caregivers; to compare the participants evaluation of these two forms of musical intervention. ⋯ The findings provide evidence for nurses that the therapeutic use of music and nursing presence as a research-based nursing intervention for the welfare of caregivers.

Effects of listening to music on pain intensity and pain distress after surgery: an intervention.
To evaluate the effects of music listening on pain intensity and pain distress on the first and second postoperative days in abdominal surgery patients and the long-term effects of music on the third postoperative day. ⋯ Music intervention should be offered as an adjunct alternative to pharmacological pain relief after abdominal surgery in nursing practice.

A systematic review of qualitative studies: patients' experiences of preoperative communication.
This article reports on a systematic review of qualitative studies on patients' experiences of preoperative communication with healthcare professionals. ⋯ Patients' sensitivity and their different needs for communication may contribute to future advances in the training of healthcare professionals with regard to their communication knowledge and skills. They may also affect the allocation of resources for patients waiting for surgery and educating related professionals about their knowledge and skills of communication and their attitudes. Adequate space for meeting simultaneously with patients and their relatives and extra human resources and tools for the assessment of individuals' need for communication are also required.
